I see what your saying chary, but for my own personal self, I believe all styles look dated and horrible 10-15 years on,

I don't know about that. I think you can wear something really classic and timeless if you try hard enough.

Here's a picture of the dress--I'm the one in brown--the rest of the people in the background are some of DH's school friends who came over for the wedding!

I love that dress, Jennie! But it's not an overly weddingy wedding dress, if that makes sense. I think colour works better on dresses like yours than on full-on wedding dresses. Great photo, btw!

Oh, yes I agree-in any decade you can find something classic.  But for some that may not be special or different enough.  And if the price you pay is that it looks silly in a few years time, I say that doesn't matter if you felt like a beautiful princess on the day.  Because that's what you'll remember in decades to come when you look at the pictures.

Thanks guys! The photographer instructed the group to "show how happy they were to have made the trip", and they responded by leaping into the air. Clearly, I hang out with the right people.
Bet Becca, really, a wedding is such an emotional rollercoaster--good luck.  And no matter what, the day will be amazing.

I absolutely agree with you!

I want colour, which means that I've ruled out a traditional style dress completely, it's really hard to get a coloured wedding dress that don't make you look ridiculous, but a coloured cocktail dress or evening dress like yours Jennie can often look really great.

I've seen all kinds of purple dresses (I love purple!) and they did run the spectrum from gorgeous to hideous, but I'm sure you'll pick a really nice one Becca. I also think Vicky looked great in her forest green dress.

I'm having a prom style dress, probably from vivien of Holloway, but if I had the money, I'd absolutely wear this leopard print dress from Candy Anthony!

This is the style I'm thinking of :

I hope I don't end up looking like a podgy tomato! :)

Who says looking like a giant grape is a bad thing?  Who says looking like a giant snowball or a giant cloud (in white) is a good thing?  If you like the dress and you feel beautiful, who cares?  It's what you want on your day.  You've mentioned it so many times, I can tell the dress is something that is very important to you...don't compromise that!  I compromised so many things that were important for me (for my first marriage).  That was 10 years ago and I've always regretted giving up the things I wanted just to make other people happy.  Be bridezilla!  Tell them they've already had their own weddings to live through and now it's your turn to do it your way!

I think the purple is going to be gorgeous--just as an aside, while I was dealing with the shenanigans that wanting to wear a brown dress created, my friend (who also happens to be a top salon stylist and flies all over the world doing celebs and royalty's hair) told me that colour is the new white and that it "would be gorgeous, darling". (Yes, he really does talk like that!) So I say go for it!

I'm just not a fan of white. I don't even own white shirts to wear in public!  Plus, I also decided that if I go with ea coloured dress, I can probably wear int in the future to other formal events.  For those that were asking, this is the pattern for the dress:

It will be option B (the pink one), only obviously in purple.

Actually, my prom dress is what started this whole thing. I was really worried about finding a dress that looked right on my body, and my mom suggested something similar to my prom dress - I liked that pattern so much that we made 3 or 4 other dresses in the same pattern (one even short and in dark teal velvet for a Christmas party). I was going to post a pic, but apparently hometown.aol.com shut down! I'll have to find time to re-scan something in.

ahhh, thanks so much for that flickr link, I just totally fell in love with her felt bouquet.
These are gorgeous! I'm definitely going to think about that

and these boutonnieres? Lush!

tbh I wasn't going to bother with any of that stuff, but I might if they're made of felt.

:)

My DH and I paid for our wedding for the most part. I honestly can't recall all the details now, but we were fortunate that both our parents seemed to get that we were in charge. I think often the difficulty comes when parents are paying for things they really don't like.

I know some of my friends thought my dress was too va-va-voom (it was strapless and I'm not exactly skinny). But I had a lot of arty people at my wedding who actually thought it was made from vintage Edwardian fabric. I also had red in my dress and a red velvet cape... so hardly traditional.

Our only serious issue came with my BIL and his family who were totally under-dressed for the occasion and who wouldn't buy they flower girl dress we had chosen (it wasn't the money, they just went and got another dress).
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Becca, purple is my favourite colour, too. I think you should go with whatever makes you happy, and the pattern you chose looks really nice.   :) I'm sure you will look great!
