I've never been blocked from seeing a video on YouTube.

The only problem with that is everyone I know in the US is obsessed with Lost (like me) so I'd have to avoid Facebook for 5 days every week in order to avoid over 200 people posting spoilers.  :(

It's better than waiting months for the new season though :). Only a few years ago, the UK was 1 or 2 seasons behind the US in many shows... but now we only have to wait a few days for the latest episodes :).

They didn't used to block things, but now I find a lot of US-based stuff is not viewable from the UK.

I'm not really sure about what is or is not blocked from YouTube...but I know for a fact that they don't block Lost (which is the only thing I really care enough about watching anyway) because some of my friends in the UK would always watch it on YouTube (last season) a few hours after it aired in the US.  I've never had any problems watching any videos from anywhere in the world.

Hulu and YouTube don't play by the same exact rules: Hulu actually delivers content, and YouTube hosts it. Meaning, Hulu will be proactive in enforcing international copyright, but YT( at least unless courts say otherwise) gets to use the DMCA safe harbour -- they don't get blamed for hosting copyrighted content but they have to take it down when served with a takedown notice by the copyright holder.

Your friends just happened to see a video before YT managed to take it down. Doesn't mean that it was kosher or that YT doesn't block/remove videos that infringe on copyright in the country you happen to live in.

Unless YT has some kind of a contract to allow broadcasting Lost to UK audience before it airs in the UK that I'm unaware of. Though, I kinda doubt that's the case.
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

I've never managed to find any full TV episodes of new US shows on YouTube, except for ANTM (although they keep disappearing too) - if I search for other shows, all I get is clips, previews or homemade videos, which means that either there were none on the site to start with or the episodes were banned and taken down only a few hours after being uploaded.

Thanks Navie and others for the info!!

I'm obsessed with some shows that I'm sure I won't be able to get in the UK- like Parks and Rec.  I'm stoked that Glee is starting, but I'd have to wait 3 months for the season to restart... So I'm seriously considering the VPN route.

I knew there was a block with certain web content between US/UK because my husband would try to forward me links to stuff on the BBC site and I wouldn't be able to access it.

Fee Fi Fo Fum, I fell in love with an Englishman.

Met 11.5.09 in St. Lucia

Returned to US 9.9.09
Submitted Online Spousal Visa App 9.25.09

The links I've always found for TV shows were broken up into sections (lPart 1, Part 2, etc.), not a full episode on one link.  I'm not a copyright expert (and don't really know anything about 'fair use') but I know for some instances of copyright, you're allowed to "sample" the material for X amount of time without it being considered copyright infringement.  I have no idea if anything like this applies to those videos and couldn't care less (I got it right!).  YouTube's name "ain't the best in the Navy" to begin with.  I can't discuss the legalities of it (or whether it's morally right or wrong), just saying it's out there.

I'm just extremely glad to hear that I can watch Lost on TV without much delay (which my hubby will *not* be happy to hear, as he hates the show).  When I lived in Europe several years ago, we were 1-2 seasons behind on all the popular US shows.  I felt so left out not knowing how Friends ended when I moved back to the US.

Yeah, that's because you can only upload a certain file size per YouTube video (each clip can be no bigger than 2GB and no longer than 10 minutes), so episodes have to be split into several parts because the whole thing would exceed the file size limits... this is the case for all videos on YouTube, not just TV episodes :).

What channel is Parks & Rec on? I think the entire cast is phenomenal.
