International Driver's License
« on: October 12, 2009, 07:42:31 PM »
Tim and I are looking nito renting a car over our honeymoon (yay!). My PA Drive's license will be expired because it expires at the end of October and I'm just going to wait until after the wedding so  I can put it in my married name without having to carry the ugly update card.  the rental company says that drivers must possess "a valid US/Canada/International Driver's License".  Would Tim be okay to drive since he has a UK driver's license?  Or is there something called an International Driver's License?

ETA: NEVERMIND.  I called up enterprise and they told me they wrote "International Driver's License" to cover all other countries.

There is an International Driving Permit, but it is not a valid licence by itself - it is only valid when accompanied by a full driver's licence from your home country. For example, my parents have international driver's permits that they carry with their UK licences when driving abroad (in Europe/US). It is mostly useful as a translation of a foreign-language licence and isn't usually needed for UK/US licences being used in the US/UK, unless it is specified as being needed to rent a car or similar (as it seems it will be from your OP).

After reading your reply, I called up Enterprise to check with them if they meant International Permit, and the representative looked up information for UK licensed drivers and told me he will be fine. The website used the term "International Driver's License" to cover all other countries licenses.
