Thanks for all the input.  I did use to use my pilates DVDs at home frequently, but didnt bring any of them with me.  I am SO lazy after work and will NEVER go to the gym, but I *think* I'd use the Wii if it was there in the living room. (no guarantees on that though!)
Not to mention that I was unbeaten in America on the Wii boxing, so I need to take my boxing career international :)

I have a new plan:  I am just going to buy it no matter what he says!

MadWorld - if he likes to chainsaw people in half in black and white

Who doesn't like to chainsaw people in half?!  :P We thought about a Wii, but ultimately went with the PS3. We decided to only get one game system, and we went with what we thought we would play the most. Plus, we use it as our DVD / Blu-Ray player now, so it gets used nearly every day. I do sometimes wish we had gotten a Wii so I could do the exercise programmes, but as CB says, I am one of those who might do a workout video twice and then watch it collect dust, so I thought the PS3 was a better choice.

Good choice! You'll get more lastability and more use out of a PS3 than you would a wii, and it will grow more with your little guy as he gets more interested in that kind of stuff.
It's also an excellent upscaling DVD player and blu-ray player and a really good media server.
Also the BBC iplayer app is brilliant. I never used iPlayer before.
Also PlayTV is awesome - it's a freeview tuner for the PS3 which allows you to record freeview to the PS3 hard drive to watch later. If you don't have sky plus you should definitely get one! :D
