I think some of them can be quite nice and set in rooms that are historical and nicely decorated.  I guess it will depend on the location you're choosing...you should be able to google the registry office where you'll be moving and see if the site has any info available (some of the sites will have photos of the rooms).

Ok thanks, I will check out the ealing registry office site.  Do they let you have bridesmaid/groomsmen and all that?  Are there random other people who can sit in on your wedding, I dont want that. lol.

I am not entirely sure but I do think they let you organize things the way you want for the most part.  You would provide the witnesses so no one would be in the room that you didn't invite.  Some offices will let you have more leeway with changing the vows than others will--if the Ealing one isn't flexible, you could always try another one (assuming you can easily get there to give notice, etc)

Depending on where your justice is based, you could have a nice place for a wedding.  The justice in my district does his business in a big old house and we're getting married in what would be the "living room" if it was an actual house.  Of course, we wanted to get married in a gazebo next to a pond at a local hotel, but PA doesn't recognize internet ordained ministers, so we had to scrap that idea. Oh well.

But back to the walking down the aisle thing - My dad died when I was 13, and I always worried about who was going to walk me down when I eventually got married...and I finally decided I didn't need anyone to walk me down the aisle and "give me away". I am planning on attaching one of my dad's old dress uniform buttons to the wrap around my bouquet so that there is a part of him there, though :)

My father passed away years before my wedding. As I am really close to my stepfather, I had him walk me down the stairs, where my mom was waiting, then I had her take the other arm and the two of them walked me down to where DH was standing waiting for me. I know it's untraditional to have your mom walk you down the aisle, but I don't see why she shouldn't have a part in "giving me away." And my stepfather doesn't have any children of his own and has given me a lot of attention over the years, especially when my father passed away, as he had lost both of his parents by then. Another wedding I went to where the father was terminally ill and in the hospital, the girl's mother walked her down the aisle in his place.

If I had the wedding here in the UK and none of my family could come, then most likely I would've either walked down the aisle alone, or I would've asked my FIL to do it, which he probably would've loved since they had four boys and no girls.  :)

I think I will just walk myself, cause the fiance's father lives in Austrailia, along with my family I dont think his dad would make the trip for that lol.  Plus they arent really close anyway.  I just didnt know if walking down alone was some wierd thing, only I would have to do lol.

not at all!
Plenty of brides disagree with the idea of being 'given away'... myself included.

As you should be!  ;D

Loads of people get married at the registry office with just close relatives and friends and then have a do at night-time. I'm sure it will be a wonderful day, no matter what you do!  :)

I don't think it's weird at all, lots of brides have done this. This was one of my options had my uncle in law declined. For me I didn't think of it as being "given away" I wanted an escort because it made me feel more comfortable. Most of the people at my wedding I had never even met before that day so I knew I was going to be super nervous on top of the normal pre wedding jitters! I wanted someone beside me just for support. I don't feel like it took away from my 'grand entrance' at all!

My very beloved daddy died of cancer nearly 4 years ago, and I just can't bear the thought of a different male relative walking me down the aisle. When the time comes, I'll either walk myself or have my mum walk me down; I haven't decided which yet, I figure the right choice will jump out at me when it comes to planning it instead of just dreaming about it!

Back to registry office weddings...you don't have to get married where you live, but you do have to give notice there.  For example, we live in Birmingham, so we gave notice at the Birmingham registrars, but we got married in nearby Solihull because we liked their facilities better and there was more parking nearby.

There was a lot of leeway in what we could have as our wedding service - it seems like for the vows, etc., there were five different 'formats' in the wording that are considered legal, we could choose that which we liked best.  We could also have our own reading if we wanted to - there were a number to choose from, and we did chose one from their offerings, just like we chose music from their offerings.  You can choose your own for both, but they vet it to make sure there is no way there is any religious connotation.

Only your invited guests can come in to the ceremony, i.e., no one wandering in off the streets!  The room was booked for our use for 1/2 hour - that included the ceremony and some time hanging around afterwards for photos - it was a nice ceremony, and we did most of our photos out front in the area where there were lots of roses growing.  And then we partied elsewhere...it seems like we had a choice of three different rooms for the ceremony - we chose the smallest, which would seat 35...
