Possible graham cracker sub - better than digestives!
« on: October 18, 2009, 12:42:45 AM »
Hi all!

I know there has been much heated debate on the suitability of digestive biscuits as a substitute for graham crackers in baking.  :)  I (or, rather, bf) may have an alternative that's closer to the mark...

Simmers Abernethy Biscuits.  (They should be widely available in Scotland. Not sure about England or Wales.)

I sent bf a box of graham crackers as part of his birthday box last month, and he and his mum have been wracking their brains, trying to figure out what they're like.  Finally, his mum hit upon Abernethy biscuits.  So, he bought a packet for comparison's sake.  He reckons they're much closer to graham crackers in texture than digestives are.

We make no guarantees as to how well they'll bake, but I'll be experimenting as soon as I can, and will report my findings. I figured I'd put it out there in case anyone else wants to play guinea pig. :)

I'll have to pick up some and see. I'm sure I've had these before. But I can't recall anything of them.

I've just got used to using digestives and adding a touch of cinnamon. It does the deed. But I've never seen anything thats tastes and acts like a Graham cracker. Same goes for saltine crackers.

I came across this little piece from a British guy try to describe a Graham Cracker...
Quote
... if a Digestive were ever to get a Ryvita into trouble, possibly at a wild party behind the cheese board, then the resulting progeny may well end growing up to look a lot like Graham Crackers

Still tired of coteries and bans. But hanging about anyway.

I love digestives (especially the Cadbury's ones with chocolate on top...yummmm.....) but I really didn't think they tasted anything like a graham cracker.  I'm so disappointed to hear they don't have graham crackers in the UK...how the hell do you make S'mores on Bonfire Night?!?!?!!?!?!?!

Make your own graham crackers??  You do not want to see me in the kitchen trying that!

Get thee to Sainsburys or Tescos and look for Doriano Italian Crackers.  They are pretty darn close to saltines---just a bit harder.
Insert wonderfully creative signature here …

I agree completely.  They do the job for me.  I think they seem a little butterery.  If you know what I mean.

I once saw in Morrison's a box of Morrison's The Best Thin Wheat Crackers that looked suspiciously like Wheat Thins. Unfortunately, the only box they had was opened, so I thought I would try them next time. Unfortunately, next time I went, they weren't there. Has anyone seen these or tried them? I should've thrown caution to the wind and just bought the opened box. :( Thank God Ritz crackers are available here or I would be lost completely. They make excellent breadcrumbs (since I don't like the weird orange breadcrumb available here.)
