Buffalo NY Lady now on English Soil!
« on: October 24, 2009, 06:30:17 PM »
I arrived last Thursday. I am staying in a hotel in Basildon until I can rent a flat. I have been learning to get around on buses since I won't have a car for a week or so. I am so enjoying all the surprises I find. For example, diet pepsi tastes different! Who knew there would be a different recipe! It's good, just different. I have enjoyed the food since I got here. There are things I had read about that I wanted to try, so I'm doing it and have been delighted.
My new job starts on Nov. 2 and I hope to have a car and a flat before then. Jet lag wasn't so bad. The day I arrived, I was exhausted. The second day, I slept on and off all day and then slept again all night. After that, I have been fine. I have had regular online contact with family, which is great! Can't imagine what it would be like without the internet making this huge transition.
For fun, I traveled to the Basildown Town Center for two days. Found everything I need there, too. Found my bank, found a realtor to help with housing search. Found a few household things I needed. The shops are impressive and the open market is fun.
All in all, it's going well so far!
Also, wondering if there are any ExPats in Basildon area?

So glad you are enjoying your time so far.  I look forward to following in the January group of social workers coming over.  Where are you looking for an apartment? Basildon? I'm hoping that it will be manageable for us coming with a 2 year old and not having the car until Essex gives it to us.  Keep us posted!

The flat I'm looking at tomorrow is in Pitsea, not far at all. Buses go everywhere and so far, I'm understanding how to get places pretty well. There's a website: traveline.info that I use to map out how to get around on the bus. You buy tickets from the driver when you get on the bus. I don't know how I'd do it without the internet though. I'm in a hotel right now where there's wifi, thank god! Before I got here, I had grander ideas about finding housing. Now I just want to get something reasonable and decent as fast as I can. I lived out of suitcases for 2 months before flying over and I am more than ready to set up my own place.
I'll look forward to meeting you! Are you also working in Basildon?

I will be working in Basildon in Family Support.  We will be living out of suitcases for a couple of weeks before we leave. We've been considering various areas to live as I know that I don't want to live where my clients are (been there, done that, not pleasant).

Did they give you an idea of when you will get your car?
