Pre-made pie crust? Lazy, lazy, lazy!
« on: October 25, 2009, 11:44:42 AM »
Right up front, I'll admit to being super lazy.

Also, my kitchen also doesn't have a surface large enough or smooth enough to roll out a pie crust (if I wasn't so lazy).  Back in the US, I'd just buy a pre-made pie crust and fill it with pie filling.  Is such a thing available here?  I searched all of the supermarket websites, and didn't turn anything up.

Weird!  I used MySupermarket and checked the usual suspects and turned up nothing.  Errrr, it is called a "pie crust" here, right?

But thanks!  That's awesome.  My laziness and the oddly tiled kitchen counter will not hold me back.

Available all over the UK.. made by Pillsbury now.  They are located in the frozen dessert section sometimes.  I found them in the cold food section as well.  You need to look for shortcrust pastry.  Tesco, Co-op, Sainsbury's etc do own bran ones.   You can get it blocks usually.  But Jus-rol does those pre-rolled ones.

See there was your mistake!!  Plug in Jus-Rol and you'll get it... or shortcrust pastry! Pesky terminology!

I love that site though!  Thanks for the heads up!

I've never seen those! Good to know! I've seen the pre-made ones in the aisle with the baking supplies, though. (I couldn't find anything that looks like ready-made pie shells on your link)

0phinky - they're often called pastry shells, so that might have added to your confusion!

PASTRY!  Bah!  How obvious was that?  I'm going to pretend searching for pastry would have occurred to me sooner or later.   :P

I love MySupermarket -- for situations just like this.  I've got miniature Tescos and medium sized Waitrose stores within walking distance, so for a long time, I (stupidly) assumed that a lot of stuff just wasn't available here.  Not so -- just not always at smaller stores.  But correct terminology helps a whole lot!

Thanks all!

Oh I don't know about the purely pre-made, pre-formed ones since I don't use them, but they have those too.

Now I have to stop looking  up all the nice food I miss!!

I have to confess that I have used them on occasion. Sometimes you just don't feel like rolling out pastry, y'know?  :-\\\\

Or...all the time.   :P

I actually have the time and inclination to do homemade pie crusts these days, but our kitchen counter is tiled.  The oddly wide grout grid is a huge magnet for all sorts of ick.  I scrub it down with a toothbrush, but the thought of rolling out pastry and the like is just...unappetizing.   :-\\\\

On the upside, it might make for quick work on a lattice pie crust top.   :P

Yeah..I do.  I used to buy the blocks in the UK and they'd sit in my freezer for ages due to laziness.

I do like the Jus-Rol ones because you just plop them in and press them down.  I just have never tried the ones that come with the tin and everything.  Do they taste okay?  I've seen them at WalMart here.

Jus-Rol was doing an all butter one when I left... it was almost as good as homemade.

To be honest here in the US I use Pillsbury crusts most times... I even use them to make my pasties.... no complaints thus far!

If the urge strikes and you decide to roll your own dough, a pastry cloth laid over the counter will help.  I don't know where in the UK you would find one, but I should think a good cookware shop would have them.

They're not great, but they taste OK in a pinch. The problem I've found with them is that they're far too small - in depth and diameter. Or maybe we just eat too much pie!!

Jus-Rol was doing an all butter one when I left... it was almost as good as homemade.

I'll have to look out for that one. Thanks!

I don't know what a pastry cloth is, but coincidentally I found a silicone pastry mat at Lidl today for £2.99! Right after reading this thread! It's a red rectangular thing with circles of different dimensions marked on it as a guide for rolling out!

Wow! Oh man, I was just looking at those on Amazon. Might have to pop to Lidl and take a peep!
