A pastry cloth is a square of soft cotton fabric large enough to roll out pastry dough.  It's sprinkled with flour and rubbed in to prevent the dough from sticking to the cloth as you roll the dough.  There is a light weight cotton sleeve that fits the rolling pin which also needs flour rubbed into it before rolling.  They are very handy!  I've never tried using the plastic sheet but I'd start out with that first.  It sounds as though the dough won't stick to it.  If anyone tries one, I hope you will report back with your experience.

You need to search for "Pastry Case" rather than pie crust :)

Also the waitrose one is delish!

(I'm lazy too! Especially if it's just dessert and I'm cooking other stuff :) )

I am not at all lazy. I make everything from scratch, but I cannot find Crisco here in the UK and so I've taken to bringing pie crusts back from the US. If I can buy Crisco somewhere, could someone tell me where to go?  Thanks!

Ocado has it if you do online shopping.

Or for a one off, any American food stores will have it.

Or, you could save yourself the premium price and just buy the UK equivalent product - it's called Trex, sold in blocks near the butter.

I make piecrust with butter - tastes better!

You can also buy ready-to-roll shortcrust pastry here - it's called JusRoll - in either the refrigerated section or the freezer section.

No need to bring back ready made piecrust. Isn't that difficult anyway to keep them from breaking up in transit?

And you could roll out your pastry on a cutting board, that's what I do!

Good grief! You're bringing ready-made pie crusts back from the US?!?! I can understand not wanting to bother making your own, but they do sell ready-made ones here!

But as others have said, you don't need Crisco. People have been making pastry since long before Crisco was invented! Use butter, Trex or anything!  :)

JusRoll being the brand, most supermarkets also have their own store brand.

But yes, Trex is what you need, depends on what it's for. For my mince pies I use butter, for the steak and kidney pie it's Trex or a mix of both.

Some TV chef (Jamie Oliver maybe? said that life is too short to make your own pastry.....but I think he was talking about puff pastry, not shortcrust. I have made my own, and I'm a pretty good baker, but mine is frequently tough from being overworked. Why go through all that when there's an acceptable alternative?

I actually like the Aldi brand that's pre-rolled better than Just-Rol.

I used Jusroll at Thanksgiving for my apple & pumpkin pies, they turned out alright  :) It has been years since I have made my own pie pastry/crust, I wanted to try it at Thanksgiving, but time was running away with me!
I will make it again one of these days........ though then I will probably remember why I stopped making my own and began buying the pre-made  ;D

I'm pretty lazy and I make my own pie crust. The hardest part is remembering to pull the butter out of the freezer and put it into the fridge, so it's cold, but not frozen when I'm ready to make it. The recipe I use gives you the amount for 1 crust or 2 crusts. I make a few batches, then freeze them into 1 crust increments.

Tesco has JusRol on BOGOF this week...at a net price of 75p each, who can be bothered to make it.  :D

And this from someone who doesn't go to restaurants (because I cook better and I want to know what I'm eating) and doesn't buy 'convenience foods' (because they are generally crap) except in a dire emergency.  ::)
