Biscuits, do you miss them?
« on: October 26, 2009, 10:22:19 AM »
I was just thinking about biscuits, its morning here and Im hungry and a chicken biscuit sounds yum.

My first time there I wanted to go to McDonalds for a biscuit and my J asked me what I was on about. I found out when we got there. Only Mcmuffins and bagels, which I love both, but I had a craving. BK doesn't have them either.

Is there somewhere to get them? We do have some nice ones in the freezer section here. Do you have them there? I know I could learn to make them but I dunno they taste better when someone else makes them, lol, like my gran. ;)

So do you guys miss them?

No.  Because they're ridiculously easy to make.

I got burnt out on them the last time I went back to the U.S. (this Sept) The hotel we stayed at had a complementary hot breakfast. Biscuits and gravy EVERYDAY! At first I was super happy but we were there for 2 weeks so by the time we left I was like "If I see one more biscuit I'm gonna scream!"  [smiley=shout.gif]. When I get over my biscuit hate I can always make some though!

Yes, I miss them. They aren't that easy to make for me. The last time I tried to make some they were hard as rocks.  :( But other people seem to have better luck with them. I keep planning to try them again and see if I can get the knack for it.

I find that a nice cheese scone is pretty close to a biscuit, so I eat those from time to time. No, you won't find any pre-made ones here. They don't have the Pillbury type refrigerated dough, or the frozen biscuits here. Sorry. You can, however, get Bisquick here, so some people use that to make biscuits.

Once we move, I will probably make some.  I do miss them when I am eating carbs, but not enough to actually try to make them in my MIL's oven.  We rarely have KFC, but I always think, "this really isn't that worth it without the mashed potatoes and biscuits."

That's just how I felt the two times we have been to KFC. So disappointing. You can't have fried chicken without biscuits!  :o

I will have to be taught how to make them. I was thinking of asking my gran to teach a few things anyways. She makes killer fried cornbread, some people call them ho cakes but I think hers are slightly different.

I got burnt out on them the last time I went back to the U.S. (this Sept) The hotel we stayed at had a complementary hot breakfast. Biscuits and gravy EVERYDAY! Biscuits and gravy can be heavy and especially 2 weeks running. :P  Got to be careful with sausage. Heart burn city I bet, at least for me.

Ye that's what I was thinking, My gran she does hers in a bowl and makes a oh heck whats it called? I forget a center for the liquid n such.

My future Mother in law does make scones so she could also teach me if I get into trouble. Those Bisquick mixes I havent tried, so no time like the present.  :)

I haven't been to one there yet so this is heart breaking.

Exactly!

Stop bragging about your biscuit making skills... unless you wanna come over and make me some and show me how it's done.  :P Do you find you have to use strong bread flour or extra plain flour here to make them work, or do you just follow an American recipe?

The scones we get up here in the bakeries (not Tessco, ASDA, etc) look and taste just like biscuits.  ???

I just checked my recipe for biscuits and it is pretty much the same as a scone recipe. One uses flour and baking powder, the other uses self-raising.

And yes they are so simple to make.

Rub butter into flour/baking powder (this is the pita step)
Mix with milk
Knead for a minute or two
Flatten out to a 1/4 inch or so
Cut out with cookie cutter (or just cut out squares)
Bake 12 minutes at 190C

Easy.
Still tired of coteries and bans. But hanging about anyway.

I got a recipe off this site for biscuits that I really liked.  It had buttermilk in them, but they were buttermilk biscuits per se.  Only because I try and try to make real buttermilk ones that are all layered but you need way more room to roll things out then I have at my house.

Jewlz - try the biscuit recipe from Homesick Texan blog that I think you linked to a few weeks ago!!  It's sooo easy and was absolutely wonderful the very first time I tried it :).  I also have problems with biscuits turning out a bit flat/dense, so hopefully this will help you.

1. experiment with you baking powder

2. when you cut them with the cutter, push directly down. DO NOT TWIST. This will seal the sides and they won't rise so good.
It took me soo soo long to learn this and it was only when I asked my mother that she enlightened me.
