Thanks for all the helpful suggestions. I shall give it a try - hopefully this weekend!

Stop bragging about your biscuit making skills... unless you wanna come over and make me some and show me how it's done.  :P Do you find you have to use strong bread flour or extra plain flour here to make them work, or do you just follow an American recipe?

LOL... i'm not bragging!  I don't make them because I don't ever miss them.
But if I *did* miss them, I would just find a recipe and bake some!  :)

Whatever, Bragarella.  :P If you do finally miss them and decide to make some, can I come over?  ;D

Ooo, I DO twist.  Thanks AyouBob...my mom probably told me that a million times but I've managed to forget again.  Now she's gone and I need a new biscuit guru in my life, LOL! :)

2. when you cut them with the cutter, push directly down. DO NOT TWIST. This will seal the sides and they won't rise so good.
It took me soo soo long to learn this and it was only when I asked my mother that she enlightened me.
I do what AyouBob does, except I just use a glass, not a cutter...and I fold the dough over prior to cutting them out.  Just like my late Grandma.

They were delicious!  Best part is, they turned out so huge that I only ate two and now I've got four left for tomorrow (as long as DH doesn't snaffle them up when he gets home from work in the morning)! ;D

They're not - and I think they tasted better than the Homesick Texan ones I made a couple of weeks back.  Might not make a difference if you're making cream gravy, though. ;D  I didn't have any buttermilk, either, so I used whole milk and cream of tartar.

One of these days we shall have to have a biscuit party!

PM recipe for these please. And detailed instructions for the baking challenged, if it isn't too much trouble.  :P I'm down for the biscuit party! I don't have cream of tartar, but I do have some buttermilk powder that QG sent me, so I could try that!
