Foodie magazines
« on: October 26, 2009, 03:00:24 PM »
I'm thinking of subscribing to one of the food magazines - probably Good Food, Olive or Delicious.

I buy copies of them now whenever one has an interesting looking cover or something that really strikes my fancy, so I am familiar with all three. But I don't know what they're like consistently on a monthly basis, if that makes any sense.

Does anyone subscribe? Are there any pros or cons to any of them that you'd like to share?

Olive always comes with a little bonus mini-recipe book. Perhaps all the BBC ones do? They are generally good, and have different themes (i.e. healthy meals, quick meals, etc)

My personal favorite was Good Food. I didn't subscribe but bought it religiously and I miss it terribly. I found that for me, it had the most accessible recipes, best info on buying local/organic, and most interesting tips and articles. One of the others, I can't recall which, is also part of the BBC publications I think. I believe it's Olive... anyway, that one, IIRC, is just more high end, more restaurant review, etc. Much as I enjoyed that, the restuarant reviews just ended up annoying me as between budget and location, I rarely got to any of them!!

I wish I could do a foodie mag exchange! Anyone there want to swap for Bon Appetit, Cooking LIght, or some other?!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I buy Good Food occasionally and like it the best of all the cooking magazines I've tried.  Olive is nice, but since we rarely eat at restaurants, it's not worth it for me.  I love Good Food, though since the emphasis seems to be on everyday food which don't need particularly fancy ingredients to get the job done :)

I love them all!  Oh, and the Sainsbury's and Waitrose (When it's out, also it's free) ones too.  I'm not a big cook (I would like to be though) but I just love looking at all the pictures and reading about restaurants and I cut out most things I want to make hoping one day I will :D
Jaime Oliver has a magazine out now too, but I've not read it yet.

Most of the foodie mags in the UK usually come with a nice free gift when you subscribe.  I've received a few cookbooks in the past.

I subscribe to Good Food and really like it; however, after nearly three years, I am seeing repeat recipes.

Was never quite pleased with Olive or Delicious.  Every now and then I'll pick them up if I see something that takes my fancy, but would never subscribe to them.

One of them - and I can never remember which - seems to have a lot of children's recipes in it whenever I pick it up. By children's recipes, I mean things for children to help cook. That's great if you have a family, but we don't and it's sort of wasted magazine pages for me. Does anyone know which magazine that is? Is it a regular thing or just an occasional feature?

That's probably Good Food.  They do a feature called Cooking with Aunty Sarah.  Can't remember if they do it each month.

I used to buy Good Food on a near regular basis.  I love the recipes and the little tips at the front of the magazines.  I honestly can't give an opinion on Olive or a very good one on Delicious though.   :-\\\\

Good Food is the most (to me) regularly reliable ones. I like how it has fancy things and regular one-pot type things, too.
