Are you talking about a place called Wahaca? I think i remember hearing something about it before and wanted to give it a try...their menu looks alright. http://www.wahaca.co.uk/flash/downloads/wahaca_menu.pdf  Has anybody been here?

I haven't tried Wahaca, but I've heard nice things about it.

I have tried Mestizo in London, which is absolutely marvelous, with proper drinks and good food. The staff is somewhat variable, but that's the only thing I can think of to complain about there. Aside from it being so darn far away from my house!

I've been there before and I didn't think it was that bad! True it's nothing compared to "real" Mexican food but I wasn't expecting "real" Mexican food when we went anyhow. I've learned not to expect it to be what I'm used to and I think that helps. That pretty much goes for any food I try here not just Mexican.

Anyone try the Restaurant called Chimichanga? They have one in Lincoln but not made it in there yet.

We go to Wahaca Westfield about once a week :D

Wahaca is nice, just not very "mexican" - cabbage in the burritos?! On the plus side, their Frijoles are out of this world, and their "grilled steak the mexican way" is SERIOUSLY good, as are the little tacos and taquitos.
Their tortilla soup is good but a bit bland - too much tomato I think (almost like passata), pork rinds and guac and chips salsa are good.
Quesadillas are rubbish, don't like them at all... big taco salads are good.
The pork mole dish is really good.

Service is good :)

I'll definitely have to try it. Probably tomorrow as I'll be in london for the day.  Thanks for the review! I'll be sure to steer clear of the quesadillas and burritos  :D

I've tried a lot of Mexican places, and IMHO, the absolute two best in London are Green & Red in Shoreditch, and Mestizo by Euston. I also like Wahaca, but it's kinda more like a Mexican Wagamamas - nice, fresh food, but in a "rush in, rush out, we need your table NOW" atmosphere rather than a proper restaurant.

El Pacifico and La Perla in Covent Garden are both okay, though more leaning onto the Text-Mex side of things, and I hate the Texas Embassy - there is precisely one thing on the menu NOT fried and smothered in cheese (the chicken breast swimming in bottled BBQ sauce). It's Texan fried cheese heartburn alley, not Mexican food. I feel roughly the same way about Chiquitos.

Also, I wish to god I knew the name of the Mexican place we ate at in Edinburgh a couple years ago, but I was on a hen weekend and someone else did the booking. Every single one of the English girls ordered the fajitas (I think they were scared of the unfamilar menu) but I always order the mole if it's on the menu and it was SUPERB there. The waiter also took a shine to me because my pathetic high school Spanish actually came back to me and I could pronounce things properly. ;)

(In a slight thread diversion, anyone know of anywhere brick & mortar in London I can buy Masa Harina? We ran out and with the postal strikes, I don't want to order online)

I usually get this in the "luxury food" section at Sainsburys, next to all of the sushi stuff. It's a little teeny bag (enough for two dinners for me and my two hungry boys) and the masa is yellow.

Cool Chile Co have a stall on Borough Market, and i think on Portobello Market as well.   They sell masa harina, but in very small packets.

I liked Wahaca.  It was not too bad, but I would agree it is sort of like a Mexican Wagamamas.  Although to be fair I have liked everything I have eaten there and I can't say the same of Wagamamas.

Nanna Mexico is not really a feasty place sadly.  They have burrittos, nachos, tacos, quesadillas and a few other things, but it is more of a Mexican sandwich place if that makes sense.

I like it, others here do not, but then I've been here for more than three years and am happy the guac doesn't have sour cream in it.

I always get mine from Panzer's in St John's Wood.  They also have fresh corn tortillas, and canned tomatillos, as well as other American goodies.

Chiquito is just wrong! Absolutely awful!

I've been to Wahaca and wasn't that impressed. It was ok, but I have to admit I was put off from the beginning because they chose to dumb down the name by spelling it phonetically rather than just calling it Oaxaca.  :P

I certainly would like to hear the would be-English versions of "Oaxaca" if that, indeed, were the name of the restaurant.  hehe. I can just hear some crazy versions of it now.   :P

I so agree with you that Chiquito is not good.  There is one here in Portsmouth where i live at Gunwharf Quays.  It is not true Mexican what we are used to back in the States.  It is so over priced it makes me mad thinking about it.  I may be forced to go back to it for my Christmas do in December.  There are several chain restaurants in Gunwharf.

the only one i know of is Pancho Villas.
It was 'alright', but not particularly authentic... sweetcorn and courgette in the enchiladas.

We ate there when we were in Edinburgh. It was pretty good, but my body didn't seem to appreciate it!  :-X

I have been to the Chimichanga at Port Solent.  I was pretty impressed - not 100% authentic of course, but a hundred times better than any other UK attempt at Mexican that I have experienced so far.   :)

Thanks! I've heard it was nice but of course this was from a few of my British friends so I can never be to sure. I think I'll try it since it's pretty much the only Mexican option for miles on end. Again I am not expecting what I used to get back home so will not be set up for disappointment if it's awful.
