Is quick wash really that bad?
« on: November 04, 2009, 07:56:51 AM »
Mr. A works with chemicals, bacteria, and so on.  He wears lab gear, but I've always washed his work clothes in a fairly long wash (double rinse because we both are extremely sensitive to residue).  Our new washer doesn't have double rinse, but we can re-rinse and re-spin manually.

However, when I set it on "normal cotton" it took FOREVER.  I am used to washes taking 2-3 hours, but this was even longer.  Plus we're making an effort to cut down on energy consumption, so I was wondering if those who are more familiar with front loaders find that quick wash gets their things clean.  I will probably still wash Mr. A's work clothes in a longer wash.

TIA!

I try to use the quick wash as often as possible. It seems to be similar to what a regular wash in the US is. It gets everything clean for our clothes (except for a few pesky stains on some whites that not even bleach could clean!)...and it's much faster (ours is about 30-45 min).

Wow, we must need a new machine.

I wash our stuff on a 'quick wash' and it takes 3 hours!!! ???
I thought it was just a "UK thing"

Yikes!

Thanks.  I don't know how long quick wash was on our old machine, but on this one it looks to be around an hour.  I do know cycles vary a lot depending on machine, MrsRupert, but that does sound really long for quickwash.

I wish our machine had a quick wash setting!  I hate how the normal cycle takes an hour and 15 mins to an hour and a half--but that looks fast compared to some of the other machines!

The washing machine we use when we stay in Ireland has a quick was setting which takes about 20 minutes and seems fine--even on hubby's muddy work clothes (he works outside in all kinds of weather).

My current machine doesnt have a quickwash cycle, but my last machine did, and it only took about 35 minutes.

I'd wash clothes... tops, trousers, etc on quickwash, but not anything like knickers or towels which really need to have the bacteria killed with hotter water/longer wash.

We use the fast wash setting on our washing machine quite a bit- it's absolutely fine for regular clothes. It takes maybe 40 minutes or so?

You do have to be careful not to overfill the drum though (more so than a normal wash) because if you do, chances are some of the clothes won't get clean.

I don't use fast wash for duvets or towels, or things that are heavily soiled.

oh, also, I've found that fast wash tends to leave more water in the clothes than the regular wash, so I often do an extra spin cycle afterwards to get the excess water out of the clothes. (If it's a lovely drying day outside, I don't bother.)  But even with the extra spin cycle tacked on it's still faster than our regular wash cycle!

I must have the same machine as Andee because our regular wash only takes about an hour and fifteen minutes.  That doesn't seem long to me.  My clothes always get clean.  I wash bed linen, towels and whites on hot.

I used quick wash for everything. Even cloth diapers. It took just under an hour. I did use napisan but I have no doubt my clothes were clean and bacteria free.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I'm the same. Ordinary clothes go on quickwash, but sheets, towels and undies get a longer wash.

I only use quick wash for the school uniform or something light that we might need in a hurry.  Everything else goes on longer.

Yup - I do clothes on quick wash, towels and bedding longer. I personally think it's more about temperature than wash length - I do clothes on 30 and towels and bedding on at least 60.

I do everythig on quickwash, but we do have an extra rinse cycle which I use.  DH is a sensitive soul who has sensitive skin.   ;)

I think the quick wash alone would be just under an hour, but the extra rinse adds time.

Regular wash takes about three hours.  Who has time for that?

I agree.  Towels, sheets, socks and undies go on a higher temperature than regular clothes, but I use quick wash for everything.
