Things that gross you out
« on: November 05, 2009, 02:42:44 AM »
I did not know if there was a thread like this but wanted to ask. What British behavior grosses you out the most?

Mine would be a tie between cold, wet, used teabags in the sink. I know sounds wimpy but I HATED the tea stains in the work kitchen by the teabags... I mean is it that bad to just put them in the bin wet?

--- saying that, once I used the 5 second rule and I thought my boyfriend saw a ghost or something... I mean even in our own flat he was horrified..

You're not suggesting that wet teabags lying by the sink is a British behaviour, are you?

Honestly I never saw that before, are you saying everyone does it? Why would they need to air dry in the sink?

Wet teabags in the sink is gross person behavior not gross British behavour, most people don't do it.  Just like some Americans leave coffee grounds from the coffee maker in the sink but not all of them do.

Hey! I'm not British, but I leave my teabags in all sorts of places. I don't restrict myself to just the sink.  ;)

I don't think it's gross (like, "ewww" gross), more like an annoyance for the people left to find it.

I didn't realise the British have a monopoly on gross behaviour. Can we talk about grossness in general?

My American MIL leaves used teabags by the sink so she can re-use them.

Now *that's* gross!  (The re-using part, after they've been in the sink!)

I've heard people complain before about tea bags left on/in the sink, and I guess I don't get it.  What is so gross about it?  It's just a tiny bag of wet leaves, not something the cat left behind. ???

Personally, I don't think it's too gross (unless they get re-used out of the sink!), but maybe others do because it gets cold and leaves a brown stain, then dries out and sticks to the sink?

Yes, and a whole pile of them like my inlaws accumulate is pretty ick.

I agree that grossness is hardly a British trait though! It's universal!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

There are all sorts of passive-aggressive notes in the kitchen at work about people leaving tea bags everywhere. (I should photograph them for that passive-aggressive notes blog or something. :P) They stain the sink and counters, apparently, or that's the word around our office.

The things that gross me out are definitely cross-cultural: BO and poor hygiene in general, double-dipping from a dip bowl (unless it's close friends or family and you have all agreed it doesn't matter, but usually it's gross, and it's especially gross if you see a stranger do it), and smacking while eating or just being uber noisy while you eat. Ewwww.

Something that makes me shudder is when a person (perhaps of the British persuasion?) is eating eggs for breakfast and breaks open the yolk and dips their toast into it.  I don't know why but I just can't watch. And then mopping up the plate with bread or toast. [smiley=sick.gif]

Black Pudding  :-X  My husband loves this stuff! I tried it just to humor him. Big mistake! It was awful. Now when ever he brings that stuff home it's got it's own little corner in the fridge and he has to make it him self. Gross!
