But blowing out birthday candles must be worse than blowing on your own food, because everyone eats the cake that you're blowing germs on!  Whereas you're the only one eating the food you've blown on.

I must confess that I don't like it when people blow out candles. And, worst of all, is when it's a toddler. Blech! I do not want to eat that cake!!

But blowing on your own food? How is that gross? Or a health problem, even? I mean, you're just giving yourself germs you've already got, right?

I don't like birthday candles either.  Ick!  I mean, I do eat the cake, because it's cake, but I try not to think about it.  Toddlers...no, that's too gross.  :P  My sister got my nephew his own tiny cake so we didn't have to suffer his slobber.

Exactly right, chary!  I said that I understood why BostonDiner found it gross if someone put food in their mouth and then fed it to someone else, but I did not understand why blowing on your own food is considered gross.

Ah I misunderstood lol. ;D

This is one of the few instances it's a plus to have a kid with food allergies.  I always pack him his own cupcake, so the birthday boy/girl can blow out candles to their heart's content. ;)

I remember at age 10 going to a classmate's birthday party and her father was dishing up the ice cream.  After each serving he would lick the scoop. [smiley=sick.gif]  I mean -- even at that tender age my girl friend and I were too grossed out to eat any of it!

Regurgitation, diarrhea, vomit, blowing candles, licking fingers I can handle but licking the spoon? That is downright NASTY. After seeing an old workmate lick his teaspoon and put in the communal cup holder, I now clean spoons in the workplace prior to use.

Any pencil chewers out there? Teeth marks that ain't yours.

Still tired of coteries and bans. But hanging about anyway.

I think what grosses people out doesn't have to have a rational reason.  Blowing on food -- your own or others -- just bothers me. That's all.

Df travels for work but is home on wkend. When he leaves on Monday, I start finding glasses in random places  with about. 1/4 inch of milk left in them.  :-X sometimes the milk is already solid by the time I find the glasses. The smell makes me gag. Totally grosses me out.

I'll say something to df and he'll get better for a while, but then after a few weeks starts forgetting againg.

Df's step dad - who I can't stand and is a gross old man anyways - insist on doing any/all grilling on his own. But he licks his fingers, and turns the meat with his hands. Ewww. I suddenly wasn't hungry anymore.

My gross-out thing isn't nearly as bad as some of these!  It's our fish.  We have a way of feeding them where we dip a little jar into the tank to get some water, and in this water we pre-soak their food (the pellets are a bit big for them to digest properly and soaking them helps).  When I open the top and dip the jar in I yell, "Don't touch me! Don't touch me!" but they always do anyway, butting their wet, warm, and fish-scaly heads up against my hand.  I guess it's their way of saying hello.

Actually that sounds pretty cool.  :) I can imagine the first time you dipped the jar, I bet they all come and said hello and startled (frightened) you and you accidently lost your grip on said jug and it just went plop right all the way down. And then you was left in this awful dilema, do you dip you whole arm in the tank or wait for DH to come home and do it?

I know, our gonna tell me it floated.  ;D

Ha ha!  Believe it or not, I kept my composure somewhat and held onto that jar!  Right now we've got a fish in solitary confinement in a little tank, because he was nipping at the tail fin of one of the much bigger fish.  His poor fin was in shreds and that only made it more enticing to the little one who kept on nipping.  (sorry, off-topic)

Anyone ever swallow a goldfish? Ever witness a friend swallowing one?

Is that gross or is that just really fresh sushi?

I saw a guy on guiness records (dont think the show is on anymore) swallow a couple goldfish and regurgitate them back up alive.

So you're into fish!  It's my hubby who is the real fish caretaker.  He loves his fishies.

As a vegetarian, I have to say swallowing a fish live and sushi both are gross.  Sorry.

In the spring of 1939 a goldfish swallowing fad developed among male students in the USA. Outside Boston's Opera House, Jack Smookler of Northeastern University swallowed thirty-eight in front of a small crowd. The Massachusetts state legislature introduced a bill that would "preserve the fish from cruel and wanton consumption." The president of the Boston's Animal League made sure that goldfish swallowers would be arrested if campus officials did not stop this behavior. It faded out (maybe other things around that time were more distracting) but was revived periodically. By the 1970s the record had passed 300.

Isn't Jack Smookler a cool name?
