I also think that Vietnam Vets are a little different than kids of today.  They grew up hearing only the glories of war from WWII vets who had a solid cause and had major support of the country.

Anyone born after 1970 knows that not all wars are glorious adventures where you free the people from concentration camps. 

As for poor people joining the military with families you can't join the Army if you have more than 2 dependants.  So a wife and a kid, or two kids and no wife.  Unless you are joining as an officer, in which case you already have a degree.
