Corn syrup substitute?
« on: November 06, 2009, 03:50:34 PM »
Hi all

I'd like to make a pecan pie and need corn syrup for it. Can't find it in Sainsbury's or the local shop that sometimes carries American products. Is there a substitute I can use instead?

Thanks

Do you mean REAL maple syrup (which I think would be too thin) or the corn syrup based maple flavoured syrup like Aunt Jemima that you can get in some places in the UK?
UK resident since 2005, UK citizen as of 2010 due to female British parent.

Real Maple Syrup, but I've seen recipes (UK) that use golden syrup.

Here's the one I use :
http://www.ocado.com/webshop/recipe/pecan-pie/1672

and ones with golden Syrup

If you're desperate then big Tescos with a good international section sell corn syrup, and so do Ocado - http://www.ocado.com/webshop/product/Karo-Dark-Corn-Syrup/43270011?parentContainer=SEARCHkaro

There is not a direct substitute to my knowledge. However, Golden syrup will work as a substitute for the viscosity only. You will not get the right taste.

A pecan pie made without corn syrup is a Maple Pecan Pie or Golden Syrup Pecan Pie or Brown Sugar Pecan Pie.

I have never seen corn syrup here except in the odd American Food Store and on-line.
We have a huge Tesco Extra, a WallMart and a Costco but certainly these local branches don't carry it.

Still tired of coteries and bans. But hanging about anyway.

Lewis and Cooper in Northallerton (N Yorks) carry some American foods including corn syrup.

Thanks for all your comments. I've found corn syrup on ebay (hideously expensive!) but may just have to bite the bullet for the sake of authenticity. We do have a big Tesco here so I may try that before I resort to ebay.

Just wanted to chime in with the others and say that golden syrup hasn't affected the taste of my many baked goods. Maybe you could make a "practice" pecan pie to give it a whirl before committing? I doubt your family will complain...  ;D

I don't know, corn syrup is something that is very unique in taste. Although I cannot normally taste any difference in food stuffs, Kraft M&C, Cheerios, etc, between the US and UK versions, I can taste the difference if has corn syrup or not.

Don't get me wrong, your pecan pies will be most edible with golden syrup, it just won't be mom's (well my mom's). And popcorn balls will never taste the same as the ones I grew up with, unless I splurge for some Karo. Incidentally does anyone know what is the price for a bottle of Karo in the US? The last time I brought Karo Syrup here, it was about £4 for a bottle.

Interesting discovery we made on holiday this spring regarding corn syrup.

Me, DS, DD & DDBF were traveling in the US and it dawned on us that DD & I had the same preference for candy whereas DS & DDBF had a different preference altogether with no overlap of mine & DD's preference. We started to analyse this (long road trips LOL) and discovered two things:

All the candy that DS &DDBF did not like were all corn syrup based.
Both DS &DDBF absolute hate honey

How these two relate, I don't know but we discovered later a cousin that was the same, didn't like certain candies (corn syrup based) AND he couldn't stand honey. Anyone else ever experience this?

But I do think corn syrup is subtly very unique. I believe someone in another thread pointed out the difference between coke here and the US is that the US coke contains corn syrup.

Still tired of coteries and bans. But hanging about anyway.

That's really interesting... some people are sensitive to certain compounds that other people can't taste or actually enjoy. We did a cute little experiment in biology lab back in the day where we'd taste different strips of paper, each one having traces of a different (harmless) chemical. The dominant genetic predisposition was to taste nothing at all. Alternately, to about a quarter of the class, some of these strips tasted like ass. Those people were "tasters" for that particular compound, and they were the ones who don't like saccharin, NutraSweet, or other artificial sweeteners. I was one of them, and I was glad to finally have a reason to tell people why I LOATHE diet soda.

I can't find it on the Lewis & Cooper website, but it is on the Ocado website.
Selfridge's has had it in the past, and House of Fraser.

The pecan pie I made with golden syrup last year was great! I didn't really notice a difference. I mean, I only eat pecan pie once a year, usually, so I guess I wouldn't notice. I used the BBC recipe that was posted earlier.
