Cost of titer test for my Yorkie
« on: November 09, 2009, 07:42:29 PM »
Hello

I will be moving with my yorkie in about 6.5 months. I have been checking with vets here in San Diego and the price for the titer blood test and vet visit are all over $300. Does that seem high?

Thanks
Jenny

Is that just for doing blood and sending it off to KS? I paid $255 (~$125 each) to get my dog and cat done (not including microchip/vaccine), so yes, $300 for 1 pet seems high.

KS charges, I believe, $47 to perform the test, so once you factor in the vet visit + shipping to KS, ~$100 per pet is pretty reasonable. $300 per pet isn't quite as reasonable, though.

It also may depend on regional pricing, too, since I paid $134 total for 1 microchip and 2 rabies shots to get my dog/cat prepped for the bloodwork. If your vet would charge more for your dog to get those 2 procedures done, then they may just charge more in your area.

Hope that helps!

You may want to take a look at this thread: http://talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?topic=51380.0.

I ended up paying just over $100 for my dog's test. But if you are talking about the test AND visits involved, that would be a different matter and $300 would be a great price for the whole vet process.

He already has a chip that is for the office visit and the titer, I called 9 other vets in my area all around the same. Must just be the norm for my San Diego, dont know why no more money growing on my trees.

Thank You!

We have a yorkie-poo in MA and it just cost us over $300!  It included sending it off to Kansas.

We got the results fairly shortly after but am not sure what the next step is, I thought we had to wait 6 months then do one more thing before we move but can't remember what it was!  I don't think getting the all clear means we can travel now.

After you get the bloodwork results showing a high enough level of vaccine, you have to wait 6 months from the blood draw date until your pets can travel.

So if you drew blood Jan 1, got the good results Feb 3, your pet could travel no earlier than July 1.

You also need the EC 998 form, which is valid for 4 months only. So if you plan to ship your pet on July 10, you would need to have that form filled out no earlier than March 10. This form gets endorsed by your state USDA vet, and the date the USDA vet stamps on the form is what starts the 4 month window (March 10 in this example).

Finally, you need to get the tick/tapeworm treatment done 24-48hrs before travel (I don't remember if it's before check-in with the airline or before the plane leaves the ground, but check-in is generally 4 hours before the flight so if you do 24hrs before that you'll be in the 24-48hr window for both times). That needs to be signed off by your vet to complete the PETS documentation. The airline may also require a health certificate saying your pet is healthy to fly.

That's pretty much it. :)

mine is 134.00 per dog for the blood test and shipping to kansas so yes 300.00 sounds high but you live somewhere where things are a bit higher.
