NIN question...
« on: November 10, 2009, 03:09:32 PM »
I called our local Jobcentre, to make an appointment to apply for my NIN after I get my FLR-M on Nov.16. I didn't think it would be a big deal, just make the appointment for Nov 17 or 18, right? Well, the lady on the phone said that they couldn't do anything until I had my FLR-M done and processed. But, I just saw on a link that another person had posted, that you can still apply without having that documentation, as long as you have other documentation to say who you are-passport, marriage certificate, etc. I'm so confused. Can anyone clear it up?

Most NI applications are processed by mail these days. But, you'll need your FLR(M) which shows that you have the right to work in the UK. Your fiancee visa prohibits work, which is probably why they won't schedule an appointment.

But you can try calling them 0845 600 0643 and see if they'll send you the application so you can just fill it out and submit it when you've received your ID Card.

Foiled again. Just got off the phone with Jobcentre, and they won't even send me the application, because I don't have the right to work in the UK, at this precise moment. *sigh* ARGH!!!!!!!! Well, it's only next Monday, really that I have to wait for. Thanks for the suggestion, though!

Just remember that you're not acutally eligible to work until you're in posession of your Biometric ID card which will show up 1-2 weeks after your appointment for your FLR(M).

Also just to let you know because I called Job Centre the other day, it can take up to 8 weeks to get the NI #.  Once you have your Biometrics ID card, and can legally start work and find work, you'll be taxed at the emergency rate.  Once you have NI# taxes will then be adjusted.

Best wishes!

Yes, to all the info above. I got my NI number in the mail last week, but haven't received the card.

On of the questions asked when I called the 0845 number was if my spousal visa was issued in the US. It was, so they were able to send the application in the mail. It's my understanding that if you're visa is issued in the UK, you will have to make an 'in person' appointment.

So... I'm glad I finally got my NI number - now all I need to do is get a job! (though I am volunteering at Cardaid to sell Christmas cards, should be fun!)

My Visa was issued in the UK and I did everything by mail. From start to finish it took about a month to receive my letter with the NIN on it. The card did take a little longer to receive but once you have the letter that is proof enough if you want to work or find a job.

I got asked that same question--they made it a point that I had my visa issued in the US and not the UK, but like Jupy said, she got hers sorted through the post as well, so who knows :) They told me in the letter I received with my number that it would take 6-8 weeks to get the card, but I got it in 2 even in the middle of postal strikes. With that said, the number is the important thing, and once you get assigned it you can use it to sign up to work with, even if you don't have the card yet.

Oh awesome. :) Thanks for clearing that up.   I was secretly dreading paying months worth of taxes at the emergency rate, even if it does get re-adjusted.

We're going to Liverpool next Monday to go thru the FLR-M process in person and pay the extra money to get it done quicker-that day, I think. I really want to get a job, and DH feels bad for me. We pretty much had our hopes pinned on me being able to at least volunteer even if I couldn't work at a paying job, so that I could get out of the house, get to know the community and places and people and everything else. But, with this snag, I haven't been able to do any of it, of course. I know that jobs are hard to come by just now, esp in Crewe, but, it's still worth taking the shot, I think.

Hello everyone,
Finally I arrived to UK 2 days ago. Still in the time differnece sleepy stage. :D
I applied for my spousal visa from Canada. Today I called NI to apply for NIN. The lady gave a reference number and said that with these numbers I can start looking for a job. She also booked and appoitment for December 11th. and told me to bring my passport, marriage certif., and some of Canadian IDs.
Here where am really confused, because some of you are saying that you got the letter in the mail.
Can you please tell me what kind of letter is that? Also did you have to go for an appoitment?
Greatelly appreciate your posts.

In the letter I received I was told the NI number they assigned to me, some other info about how to get in touch with them if anything was incorrect (i.e. they mispelled my name, etc), and to tell me I'd get my NI card within 6-8 weeks. I never went for an appointment, but my visa was issued from the US. I'm not sure if the difference lies in the fact that your visa was issued in Canada, or if it's some other reason  :-\\\\

I received the same letter as Tams. I did everything using the post only and never had to go in for an appointment. I guess if they needed more info the would have called and booked me an appointment but that never happend.
