Anyone into Golf in London?
« on: November 11, 2009, 09:26:44 AM »
I'd love to have a few buddies to golf with.  I am not very good and don't have a handicap, but really enjoy the game.  Hubby and I play about 2 - 4 times a month, but I'd love to play more during the week when the rates are cheaper.

If anyone would like to learn the game in my area, the south thames college puts on a cheap class for around £40 for 8 weeks at the Central London Golf Centre.  Good value.

Too bad you don't live up in Northampton, I started golfing a year ago and just love playing.  I found a very nice group of ladies at the local county golf club and we play 3 times a week.  Have a look around at your local golf clubs and ask if you can join the ladies for a game.  Chances are they will be very welcoming.

Thanks Katey,   I have this perception that Ladies who belong to the Club are really good and a bit out of my league.   ;)

Did you have to join the club to play with the ladies?  I don't think the finances would budget for that until after Christmas.

As it is a county golf club it is a bit more informal than a private one.  You do not have to be a member to play you can just pay and play, I think a round of golf during the week is about £15.  I just happened to be there to practice one day and saw a sign that they were having a novice nine round for any new players that would like to come along.  I'm a rather shy person but none of my friends wanted to play so I just put my name on the list and showed up on the day.  They were a very warm an welcoming group and encouraged me to join them on a more regular basis.  Now the poor dears can't get rid of me.  I also  took some lessons from one of the pros there and found out that every Friday morning he held a 2 hour clinic for the ladies, so was able to meet ladies that way as well.
The ladies I play with are a real mix of ages and abilities.  A  lot of them are a solid 36 handicap but then others are very low in the teens.  I have found that no matter what their ability they are all welcoming to the beginner.  If you have a county course near to you check them out I would guess they are always looking for new ladies to play.  Many of the ladies at the private courses all started out at the county course.  If you don't have a county course it would be worth a try to contact the ladies section of whatever course you play and tell them you are a beginner and would they be willing show you around etc.

Let me know how you get along.

WOW! I haven't played golf for a few years - and I was never really any good. But I did enjoy it! My golf clubs are still sitting in the US, and I really don't have the equipment -

More info on the classes - which part of London and which day??? It would be great fun to enjoy a FUN round of golf once and awhile (I just can't be one of those people who takes it too seriously!)

Yeah!

Katey - thanks for the wonderful insight on the ladies play at the public golf courses.  I've been playing at one, but didn't even think to ask about joining the more qualified golfers.  I will check it out.

Lisa - I took my lessons through South Thames College http://tinyurl.com/yac9mm8  they are on Saturday mornings for 8 weeks for £30...a real bargin and they loan you clubs for the lessons if you don't have any. The next set starts in January.
Here's the location: Central London Golf Centre in Wandsworth http://www.clgc.co.uk/.  It's a great beginner's 9 hole. I'd love to have someone to play with if your interested.  You can rent club from them too.  I also left my clubs in the states, but found a great deal on ebay for some used ones.  I don't take it too seriously either.  i enjoy being outside with fun people.  Let me know if you're interested.

Kelli
Yeah, I'd be interested. What's the nearest tube stop? Be nice to get out on a nice, crisp autumn day..
