I am so sad.  I can't seem to use Talkster anymore.  The numbers didn't work anymore so I went to the website and it took me right to Rebtel.  So I am guessing free phone calls are over?  I still Skype but it's nice to call from my cell and not have to be near the laptop to call for free.

Hi Lizzylou -

I used both Talkster and Rebtel and I found out while in the UK over xmas that they had merged with Rebtel fortunately I already had both numbers to contact my family in the US, so it was no problem. Just join Rebtel it is EXACTLY the same as Talkster and you will be back to free mobile calls again :)

Hope this helps

CMG--

Thank you! I have seen Talkster mentioned before, but wasn't quite sure what it was.  I am definitely going to check it out.  I hate having to be glued to a computer to call my boyfriend, and always heard bad reviews on the skype phones.  This is excellent, definitely trying it out tomorrow!

Make sure you go to www.Rebtel.com instead - the two companies have merged but it is exactly the same - still free :)

All I had to do was log on to get a new number through Rebtel. Easy Peasy. Connection times seem to be faster with Rebtel even.

Love this service!
If you are still debating getting a number - do it! Being able to just pick up the phone and dial your SO when you are having a bad day at work and aren't anywhere near your home webcam is priceless of course....but FREE is just plain awesome!

I'll try it. I'm just still skeptical that I'll get my next phone bill and it will be like 1500 or some crazy amount of money. FREE is sooo much better, you are right!
My boyfriend doesn't have to have Rebtel for it to be free, does he?

Pickled- keep me updated, for sure.
Maui- where in Maui are you at? My parents have a house in Hawaii that a frequent from time to time.

Aricarai - I was nervous about that at first as well. You never give them your credit card information, but that first month afterwards when I opened up my cell phone bill I was holding my breath, waiting for the kick in the gut.

Never happened. I've been using it for a couple months now and my cell phone bill has never increased even one penny. Basically you are both using local numbers. As long as the number they give him on his side (the one which shows up on his phone when you call him) is local you'll be fine. It's literally the same as calling someone who's across the street.

I have noticed that occassionally the line doesn't work. There will be nothing but silence when you dial and you can't connect to your person. But usually you just try again in ten minutes and everything's fine. Hey, it's free, so I don't expect the perfection I would if it were a paid service.

Oh, and my fiance never had to sign up for the service or even visit the website. All he has to do is just use the London number to call me. Your boyfriend doesn't have to join anything.

I live on Lahaina side of Maui. It's gorgeous here and I'm trying to soak up as much sun and warmth as possible before I make the big move to England after my April wedding. :) Which island is your parent's place on?

The house is on Maui on the Kihei side. I haven't been for awhile, but I'm hoping to get back in February sometime. It's waaaay to cold in Washington State at the moment.

Okay, I'll give Rebtel a go! It's reassuring knowing that you don't have to give them a credit card! THANKS!  ;D

No. I fell in love with the island of Kauai when I first moved to Hawaii, so we'll be having a beach wedding on the North Shore of that island.   Sigh..... can't wait!!!!!!!!!!

Ooh, I'm jealous. I want a beach wedding :)
But whatever kind of shindig we end up having, it won't be for a couple years. We're doing the two wedding thing!

Aricarai--I did end up trying Rebtel for a few minutes the other day, but BF is worried that it will still end up charging him for the minutes he uses, since he's on a PAYG plan with O2, so I haven't quite convinced him on this one yet. But for the short time that i did use it, it seemed fine!  Jarvis seems to be quite the fan of skype, and has some sort of unlimited plan that allows him to call the US for something like 5 or 7 pounds/month, and since he's almost always around a wireless network, he just likes to call via the skype app on his iphone.

Maui-- your beach weedding seems like it will be so much fun! I have heard it costs about the same to fly to hawaii from both the east coast of the US, and the UK. Does anybody know if this is true?  This might come in handy when I begin to plan a wedding...

Pickled -

The minutes on both of your plans are used/charged for the calls you make with Rebtel. You just do not get charged for the long distance. My recommendation is to have an unlimited minutes plan on your mobiles. No matter the cost, it is still less expensive than calling cards and less hassle than being tied to your computer for a skype call :)

Hope this helps.

Thanks CMG,

I've already got tons of minutes, so i'm not worried about that at all, he's just silly about things sometimes...and since he's always around wireless, he can call my cell phone from his mobile using skype.  I certainly do plan on using Rebtel to call him from whenever i need to get in touch with him, as it seems great to me! :D
