Dating in the UK
« on: November 12, 2009, 07:07:06 PM »
So going off landcal02's post, what is dating in the UK like in general? I'm sure that there are some differences. (I have heard people say -- you can tell me if you agree or not -- that US dating is very ritualized - dinner, etc and that there are more hook-ups in the UK.) What have you noticed? How would you compare UK and US men?

It seems that a lot of you have met your partners online -- is that particularly common in the UK, at least for those searching for something less casual?

I have never been on a date with someone in the UK or from the UK, but from what I have heard from my friends, they have 'hung out' with guys but have never been on a 'proper' date. Other friends have and are very open to using websites for meeting people. Again, I have never dated in the UK so all I know is hearsay.

I met my husband in a bar. We exchanged phone numbers, he called me the next day and we went out for dinner and drinks a few days later. Pretty similar to anything I did in the US.  :)

In my experience, it's the exact opposite of that. But I think it really comes down to the sort of people you're dating, no matter which country you're in.

I do think in the UK there is more kind of group hanging out & hooking up than actual dating, especially with younger people. Singles over about 30 do more of the 'going on dates' I would say.  There's a perception in the UK that Americans tend to 'serial date' which is not that common here - although I think it's taking off more with the rise of online dating agencies, speed dating etc.

One of my closest friends is doing a bit of dating right now and it doesn't seem any different than it was in the US to be honest. They went out for drinks a couple of times, then out to dinner a couple times, then she cooked dinner for him, etc. etc.

I was thinking that other than my hubby, I have never dated a British guy, and then I remembered that I did!

It was only one date.  I saw the guy a few times in a pub where we both were playing in the Irish session.  He asked if I'd like to go for coffee, so we met at the coffee place, and then we went back to his place later for chatting and he made us dinner.  Very similar to many US dating experiences, but like I said, it was only the one date.

The experience with my hubby might not count because of the LDR aspect, etc.
