But at the same time, they're always harping on about recruiting more international students, because they're a cash cow for universities.

Not only that, but they are statistically more likely to add to the uni's stats as well for good grades.

I hate to tell you, but I think that's part of the plan, to limit the number of higer ed spaces for international students.   There were many UK students that were unable to enter Uni last year due to space shortages, and I've heard a few times (on TV news and the paper) that they're attributing part of this to the high numbers of international students.

I thought this wasn't true. From what the universities told me, they can only have a certain number of UK/EU students, but since international students don't rely on government funding that the allowance for them was different  :-X :-\\\\

I do dispute their claim that international students are in high numbers. The numbers have been doing down within the last few years. Also, generally more people have been applying according to UCAS, which doesn't put the fault on international student. Of course you're going to have shortages when more people are applying.

There's only so many students in general a Uni can accomodate.  And it's been widely reported that there were higher numbers of UK students unable to attend last year which can be partly blamed on the numbers of international students.

I'm not saying this, it's just what I've read in the paper and heard on the news.

I understand the number of places are limited. However, more UK/EU students have been applying as well. I understand that you aren't personally saying this, it's just upsetting that newspapers and the news are reporting these shortages are due to international students.  :-\\\\ I also hope Brown is just puffing himself up for voters since there is a huge possibility his party is going to lose power soon.

Right, and I think the main reason it's getting reported as this is because of all of the news about immigration in general currently (which seems to have just mushroomed since Nick Griffin's appearance on Question Time).  It's a lot of politics, and of course media is trying to sell papers with stories, etc.  A good part of the reporting I'm sure is just to help Labour keep votes, they have to look strong on immigration.
