Vegan Turkey?
« on: November 16, 2009, 02:42:15 PM »
Does anyone know where I can buy or order a vegan turkey for Thanksgiving? We have always had Tofurky but that doesn't seem to be available here.

Our Thanksgiving won't be the same without some non-turkey!!

:) Rayna

Holland and Barratt definitely do a vegetarian turkey roast. I am not sure if it is vegan though.

According to Turtle Island Foods (who make tofurkey), here is a list of UK retailers who carry their products.  Not for sure they would have tofurkey specifically, but it would be worth a call to them to find out:

Slightly OT, but what does a a vegan turkey taste like? I always imagined it would taste a bit like those frozen turkey loaves-they are like a meatloaf, but of pressed turkey

Tofurky is not a loaf like meatloaf at all.  Its a soy based "turkey" (kind of like Quorn "chicken" if you have ever had that) stuffed with stuffing.  Pour some "gravy" over it and its delicious!

Here are their holiday products: http://www.tofurky.com/tofurkyproducts/holiday_products.html

You aren't convincing me, I tried some of the Quorn "chicken" pieces once in a stir fry and thought they were disgusting, like the mechanically reclaimed chicken pieces.
I'll stick with my turkey!

No offence Tykeman, I am sure you are only joking,  but why do meat eaters always think vegetarians/vegans are trying to convince them of something?  :-\\\\

Quorn is way different.  It is the texture that is odd about it, although I like it.

Tykeman - why even bother commenting?  It was not an attempt to convince you of anything.   I have never understood why some meat eaters are so negative towards vegetarians.

Eat all the turkey you can manage... I wont even begin to tell you why I think that is disgusting.

I don't - it was said as a joke when the poster said it tasted delicious, but they are the ones trying to convince themselves by having veggie food that resembles meat! My best friend is veggie but he can't abide the stuff that looks/tastes like meat and gets annoyed when it's given as the veggie option.

I do like to have vegetarian meals, at least once a week is a meat free day.

Quorn mince is good for a low fat chilli though

Clearly if I said I think it tastes delicious, I do not need to convince myself of this...
