New Orleans to Uxbridge, on work permit
« on: July 31, 2004, 08:40:40 PM »
Hi everyone.  I live in New Orleans and am heading to Uxbridge.  I have just received my work permit and will be completing my visa application this week.  I am also bringing my BF as an unmarried partner.  I will be leaving for the UK at the beginning of September and my job starts in October.  My BF will not be coming over until November.  I am very excited, but a little nervous to be arranging a flat, bank account, etc. all on my own.  This is made worse by the fact that I am studying and taking the CPA exam now.  In fact, I only have five days from the date of my last exam until my move.  Needless to say, I have had very little time to prepare.  At least I did a lot of ground work in the beginning.

I look forward to all the great advice and just hope I will be able to spend ANY time on the site, in the next 5 weeks.

Hi, Sara! Welcome. I promise this site will help soooo much with your move - I wish I'd found it about a year earlier than I did!!!  :)

And by-the-way, my fiance and I live in Gerrards Cross which is just a hop skip and jump from Uxbridge (in fact we went shopping there just yesterday!) and we do have the odd "get the Americans over for a BBQ" night, so pm me if you want to hang out when you get here!

Hello over here on this thread, Sara  :)
We get buses around here which have crazy, loud designs saying to go to The Chimes mall in Uxbridge because one or 2 of the buses go from Wycombe to Uxbridge.
As Anne said, we hope to have more BBQing and get togethers.  In fact, when our kitchen is done and we get back from our holiday in the States in September I'm sure we'll have a BBQ hopefully before it gets too chilly out!  It'd be great to have some expats around.

Howdy from a fellow New Orleans-ian!  Erm...Orleanian?  Well....someone else living in NO, anyway!

I would love a get together.  You get back the 18th, right?

And, YAY, for New Orleans.  I love it here.  I didn't realize how much I would miss it.   :\\\'(

As much as I have no desire to go back to the US, I do want to take my husband to New Orleans because I absolutely loved visiting it myself a few years ago with my kids.  So, Sara, you're going to have to tell me how to "do it" like a native - we hate sticking out like tourists!!

And I'm very happy to see you over here.  Truly.   :)

My best advice on not sticking out is to: 1-- abruptly ignore the panhandlers and con artists is the Quarter (even the small kids), 2-- realize that the streetcar is actual transportation for some people.  Don't stand in the doorway of the streetcar (even if you are still searching for money -- move inside the car so the attendent can stay on schedule) and don't ask for change (none is given).  3-- realize that most natives drink like fish and have a good time (though they tend not to frequent the Quarter as often as other places), so you don't have to say how crazy you are, chances are it's a normal Saturday night for the natives.

Sniff, sniff.  I really will miss it.

Edited to add:  Thanks, peedal.  I was happy to see you over here too!!

Sometimes it is scary, the things we have in common.   Just for that, a funny smiley is in order.  And if you haven't noticed, I am 12 years old.  [smiley=bootyshake.gif]
