Next time walk straight into a shop and tell them what's going on.  Don't worry about being polite or a good girl. Get your phone out.  This is wrong and it's scary.  Have a look at the Suzy Lamplugh Trust page.  There's some good advice.

If you were by any shops, ducking into one might be an option if this ever happens again.

Thank you Mindy and Geeta :) I hope there won't be a next time, but I am much more prepared now to deal with it.

Hey rae, I really consider myself to be quite tough and used to bad neighbourhoods but something similar happened to me when we were living in East London, I got followed off the bus, and the guy was asking my name etc, he grabbed my arm and tried to pull me towards a car or alley or something, as I was struggling with him (not really struggling, but telling him to leave me alone and pulling away etc)  a police car drove passed and he ran off, I called my DB to come get me.

I was really (weirdly) embarrassed etc and didn't know if I was making a mountain out of a mole hill or causing a fuss, so I didn't do anything, which was a bit stupid in hindsight. I had a couple of other similar things happen in E1, another guy grabbed my arm and someone else followed me around, I ducked into shops, or went back to the tube or called my DB.
I don't have this problem where I'm living now, I think it was specific to the neighbourhood I was living in (which was nice/posh but could get unsavoury at night) at the time.

Make sure you always have your phone, unlocked in your pocket when you're walking around at night and check out those Suzy Lamplugh tips.

stay safe!

The links that Mindy gave probably cover this, but... i shudder when i see girls (particularly) wearing headphones/earphones when walking alone at night.  If you're listening to music, you can't be aware of what's going on all around you, and you won't know if you're being followed.

Just want to say thanks for the links. I have passed them on to my DD, ex and DW. Sometimes it is better for people to read things than be told.

Still tired of coteries and bans. But hanging about anyway.

Eeek! I got followed the other night as well!

I was walking home from town by myself, and it was after dark. I could have taken the long route along the seafront, where there are bound to be people milling about, but instead I took the shortcut which lead me up a residential road that was almost completely deserted. I crossed paths with a man and he said hello to me, but it was dark and I was pretty skittish so I just kept walking without responding. About a minute later I saw something out of the corner of my eye. It was the same man, walking down the opposite side of the street, but in the same direction as me!

He jogged across the street towards me when he saw me noticing him.  I got my keys out and put them in what I like to call "wolverine mode" (you know, you make a fist and stick your keys out from between your fingers), but I was carrying my laptop bag, a big heavy purse, and wearing a heavy coat, so I was bogged down and far from being in optimal ass-kicking mode.  He started asking me loads of questions and walking side by side with me, and though I repeatedly tried to widen the gap between us,  he'd close it again every time. I started walking straight down the middle of the road just to be away from him, and I told him I had a boyfriend and I wanted to be left alone. If this was a normal type of person, my body language alone would have made them f*** right off.

I was soooooo creeped out and felt really threatened. He kept asking questions about my boyfriend, and  finally I told him that I lived right down the road and that the bf would be outside of our building to meet me..(which was a lie). This guy walked with me for a couple of minutes, until I saw another male pedestrian coming up our way. I said "There he is!" and waved (though I had no clue who this person coming up towards us was). The creepster hightailed it out of there and the random person probably thought I was insane. :)

Alls well that ends well, I suppose. I will be taking the long way home next time I'm out alone after dark!

Oh yeah, and in response to the original topic of this thread,

I too always find that people look at me, but only because I was looking at them first.
Not just men, but old ladies, children, etc etc. I like looking at people. Maybe that makes me creepy.

Very good tips. I do this as well and have done the wave bit before (that was in Edinburgh, chances are in the small town I live, I will have seen that face before)

Nope, not creepy in the least. People watching is fun. People are interesting for all sorts of reasons. Some dress to be seen, some dress to blend and some just don't care.

lol I call it the same *high five*

on the topic, for me it's a feeling of being underdressed. Everyone in Brighton seems to be fashionable, and Im a very jeans, sneakers and nerdy-shirt-no-one-will-get-except-other-nerds kind of gal.  I come from a place where its not unusual to go to university courses in pj pants.  Im not used to the formality of needing knee high black stilletto boots to go up the road.

You guys are crazy.    [smiley=laugh4.gif]

I can guarantee you if I even thought someone was following me, I'd turn Jedi on him.  Turn around and drop kick him, then punch him in the face, then do a spinning kick to the chest and watch him fly backwards and fall to the ground in slow motion....

OK maybe not...

But at a minimum I would start yelling really loud...or acting crazy...something to freak them out.

On a lighter note, a hot guy (yes, I was looking...but I didn't touch  :P) was staring at me the other day so I asked him if he wanted a picture...cuz it would last longer...he blushed.   ;D

I would have said yes, please. But now I'm not so sure with all these female Jedi Ninjas running about wolvering high-fives all over the place.

But jeesh what a wimp; what kind of man blushes.  ;D

That's what they say in France: "Vous voulez ma photo ?"

This happened to a girl I knew.  She was just minding her own business walking along the street with her walkman on (it was a loooong time ago).  She became aware of this guy staring at her and following her so she asked him what was up. Turned out he thought she was a prostitute!!

??? Was she...ahem, wearing the proper 'attire' for that sort of occupation? What an odd conclusion to make about someone...
