Cell vs landline.

I'm at my daughters home in Las Vegas this week and she is in a dell and doesn't have a cell signal from any of the cell providers.

At home I have a Magic Jack for long distance and a landline for local calls. Magic Jack is very economical ($19 per year I think) but leaves a lot to be desired. For one, the voice quality is bad.

As for cell phones it has led to a new culture where conversations are terminated without warning mid sentance due to going into a dead signal areas.

In electrical emergencies it's not just having a landline that matters it's having one that's 'corded'.  If there is a power failure corded landline phones will still work but those that you can carry around the house won't work even if they are landline phones.

I'm not 40 yet (!) and I don't understand the desire to give up on landlines. I only talk on my mobile if I really need to, I hate how people sounds on it, that you lose signal, and that my ear gets hot! I can talk on the landline cordless for an hour without either the handset or my ear getting hot!
I must live in the dark ages coz I also don't have skype, much to the dismay of friends living abroad. I don't like the sound of that either. Sorry, I just like a nice, clear landline that I can have a normal conversation on!
 :)

I agree that talking for long periods is much more comfy on a landline.  But as far as the sound on Skype, it sounds great on my hubby's computer 99% of the time.

Andee,

Do you have to use the head phones or a regular phone to use Skye?

You can get a headset--looks just like a regular phone, but slimmer and that plugs into the computer.  You can talk through it / listen through it or you can put the computer on a speaker phone setting and then you don't need to use the headset to talk into.

I just set up the whole Skype monthly subscription thing.  Basically I paid £6.95 per month for unlimited world calls (of course not to every country).  Also paid an extra £10 to have a US number assigned to my Skype (so my Mom can call a local number and it'll ring my skype).  If skype isn't on the calls will forward to my landline (was included in subscription), and if I don't answer that then it'll go to Skype voicemail.  All in all, I'm STOKED!  Thanks Redneckyank... I've used Skype for over a year and had no idea all this other stuff even existed!

Yep! Skype rocks! Hubby has had a subscription for ages. He has a US number for me to call (from any phone) that gets forwarded to his landline or mobi, depending on where he is. He also has a UK number set up to be forwarded to me so that our family & friends in the UK can call me. There is even a US number that I can call & he has set up frequently called numbers in the UK for me, so I just have to choose who I want to talk to. He has it all sorted. haha It has been a money and sanity saver for us, since we talk for hours every day. LOL

Only very few times have we ever had any problems with clarity on our Skype calls.
