Hello from an expat expat!
« on: August 01, 2004, 03:22:53 AM »
Hi all,
Let's see...I move to the UK in January '03 to be with my boyfriend, and married him 1 year later to the day my plane landed.  In the meantime I successfully got a job and a work permit as a teacher and have lots of resources to help anyone wanting to go that route. In April we decided to move stateside to give it a go here and so far it's been great, though I miss the UK and love to have a connection there through these forums.

Welcome sedders.  I joined today, too, as did many who are familiar to us.  Too bad, I couldn't get my same user name.  Nice to see a familiar face!!!

Welcome to the boards!!! I'm a soon-to-be-expat-expat myself, though looking forward to a life-time of being in both lands. :) We're a great bunch here - so go on, have at it! :)
I'm done moving. Unrepatriated back to the UK, here for good!

Sara-thanks for the welcome, and to reply to your post on Matt's intro site (not wanting to hijack his again if that makes sense) that IS too funny that our names are so familiar. Only "sedders" is my nickname, off a longer variation of my last name "Sederman" which to this day I have found NO ONE with that name except my family.  Oh well...I look forward to see ing your posts on political threads, of which I'm a constant lurker but infrequent poster.

Marlespo--congrats on soon becoming an expat expat.  Let me know if you need any help with the process!  I think we had a pretty easy time of it, though.

Thanks to everyone else for the welcome!

Really, I'd have thought that there'd be some other Jews with it, since it sounds vaguely Yiddish.

It's funny that you mention that, because I almost said my last name was Sederman and no I'm not Jewish!  It's true..the word "Seder" and adding "man" to the end makes it sound like a Jewish last name.  But a Jewish person once told me that there would never be the last name "Sederman" because the Seder meal is so sacred that it wouldn't be incorporated into a name.  It's actually Swedish--an Ellis Island version of something like "Soderman".

Ah, well, I wasn't actually thinking of Seder as the root, but "siedler" which is German for settler (literally "migrant" the root for im- or em-), and so, a decent enough Yiddish name for an immigrant Jew (either trans-atlantic or trans-central European). And it's possible that the Swedish is linked to the German meaning as well, a reasonable name to take on immigration.

Oh come on, you have to join in and post.  everybody has to get 25 posts beforehand though, to be allowed to post in Pettifog.  As you can see, I am hard at work to get to 25.   ;D

Well, anything I would post would just be "Yeah, what she said!"  Sadly, we all seemed to agree except for a few poor souls.  Speaking of which, did you see Bill Mauer on Friday night? He had on Michael Moore, the former Canadian Prime Minister and a poor Republican sat defending himself and his party.  I kind of felt bad for him.  Either way, the highlight was when Ralph Nader came on and Bill and Michael got on their knees and begged him not to run. Hilarious.

p.s. twistedncynical I don't recognize your name-what was it on the other site?

I didn't see it live, but saw a picture today.  I would fall out of my chair if it convinced Nader to drop out.

Thanks for the link!  Yeah, it was funny, but very much for humor rather than a true go at it.  If I had been in the audience I would have definitely run up and joined them, though!

That would have been awesome.  I doubt I would have been smart enough to think of running up there myself, but I would have loved to see that.

P.S. All these smilies are great.  I find myself wanting to use them, no matter if it is appropriate for the post.  So here is one:   [smiley=bootyshake.gif]

Ah, yes. I find this one to be very British.   Brits (not all and I realize this is a huge stereotype) love as my Brit husband says, "poo poo pee pee caca" humour, which includes things like mooning.  I find my husband's British customs to be more sophisticated than mine, yet his sense of humour is off the scales.

I do love the smilies here, especially as I am a firm believer that we will all be communicating through smilies in a dozen or so more years. (Or maybe I shouldn't have gone for that extra nightcap ;) )  Here's my fave so far (though DUC, whom I'm so happy to see here, is the true master of them)   [smiley=computer.gif]  'though my favourite all time is the headbanging one.
