Well, the Costco trip didn't happen today.

We didn't even make it to Purley before we decided to turn around and head home because of the horrendous traffic.

So we're going to try to go again this coming Friday afternoon.

Sorry about that!

I'm afraid I would have to disagree with others about chocolate chips found at UK Costco, as I would call them semi-sweet even though it doesn't not say that on the packaging.  They are 53% dark Belgian chocolate and work every bit as well as Nestles, well that's just my opinion anyway.

I just bought a large box of Orville R. popcorn so you can definately get that here.

As other have said, no to Karo syrup but I just use golden syrup and have no problems.

Hi, just went to Costco yesterday and used my US card which is definitely expired (I have been in the UK for a year and the last time card was renewed was in Apr.), never mind. I guess I will renew when they will tell me ;D

To be honest I found the quality of Costco (Reading) meats worse than Tesco or Sainsburys. Another issue here is that our apartment is a UK size apartment and storage is always an issue. Buying Costco kitchen rolls overtakes my kitchen...

Just a note on Costco stocks: not all Costco's stock the same items as its based on demand, so you may want to call and find out what your local Costco (to be) stocks and even then that still may change.  Pain relievers are usually limited to Trade Memberships only, so don't count on even being able to purchase pain relievers from Costco.   :-\\\\

As others have mentioned about half the items you're looking for just aren't sold in the UK, except from specialty import shops at extortionate rates.  If its something heavy like Karo Syrup you may want to stock up before you move and if you have a friend or family member willing to send lighter goods over see if they'd be willing to do so for you (even if you pay them either from a US bank account or via Pay Pal etc).  A side note, there was a recent thread about Karo Syrup I believe in reference to Pecan Pie - I know I and maybe someone else posted recipe's to make your own Karo Syrup substitute.   ;)

Stick deodorant isn't as widely sold in the UK as it is in the US: deodorants tend to primarily be roll on or spray, although a few still do stick, but they're harder to find.  Again if you may want to stock up initially and see if someone will add it to a care package if it's something you know you can't live without.  Also, Amazon.com tend to sell some toiletries, but you may need to check if they'll ship the item internationally plus weigh up how much the shipping will cost you...   :-\\\\

Good luck!

OT, but I just read this awesome article about how true pecan pie shouldn't be made with Karo anyway - the pie existed well before Karo did... Karo in pecan pie is totally the result of a very successful marketing campaign. It turns out that the syrup that should be used isn't even very widely made in the US anymore so the guy who wrote the article went in search of the perfect way to make pecan pie without Karo. I think I'll try it for Christmas.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

So are you going to share this recipe or what?!  :P

And of course Birmingham now has the biggest Cybercandy, so lots of American soft drinks, etc. there.

Sorry, slightly OT but whereabouts in Birmingham? Anyplace walkable from New Street Station?

Am looking forward to getting my Costco card soon, Mom & Dad put me on their US account  :)

80 Bull Street, just a few minutes from the Station (no more than 5).

Thanks everyone!  I'm so pleased that I'll be able to get some of this stuff over there.  ;D

The rest of it I'll learn to live without. I'm sure there are substitutes for everything. I'll probably even find stuff I like loads more!

Maybe I can make chex mix with different cereals????
The idea of trying to get used to roll-on deodorants makes me shudder....but I'm sure I'll get over it in time. :)

Mahalo for everyone's updates!

I am not a fan of roll-ons. Dove solids are easily found here.

I was never a fan of roll-on either so I used to stock up on toiletries when I was home.  I have super sensitive skin so changing soap and deodorant makes me break out in hives.  A couple of three packs of deodorant from Target lasted me a long time!
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

As are Mitchum 'Smart Solids' in various scents.

Why do people prefer solids to roll-ons?
