Black school shoes
« on: November 29, 2009, 02:35:19 PM »
We are moving to the UK in a months time and my 14 yo daughter needs to wear black shoes and black trousers to school. We're used to there being 'rules' about what sort of shoes are worn, but as far as I can tell it is fairly open over there. Given the rain and cold, it would seem to me that  black leather boots would be a sensible option. Does anyone have a teenage daughter, and any insight into what sort of shoes are worn to school in winter? She will be walking (5+ minutes) to and from school every day.

From the local high school in our village I've seen just about everything from high heels to boots.  You may be better off asking one of the staff at the school your daughter will be attending to see what they deem to be acceptable.  What may pass at one school may not be the case for yours - just my 2p before you go out and buy shoes for her and then end up having to rebuy.

Plus, you want to have shoes that everyone else has or that everyone thinks are cool.
My daughters' schools were/are always pretty strict about school shoes (no heels, no boots, no trainers) but some other schools aren't.

Yeah boots would be a no-no at most schools.

All of the girls I used to see around town would have on black ballet flats with tights. It always seemed so impractical with the weather, but they were teenagers so that's pretty much what you expect!  :D

I'm a teacher at a secondary school in London and most girls wear black ballet flats and tights and a skirt, even in the winter.  Definitely don't get her trainers (tennis shoes/sneakers) as those seem to be a big no-no at schools.  Don't ask me why.  I think it's really silly.  My school is also really strict that the shoes have to be completely black, no hint of color at all, even a small pink stripe or white or coulored laces are not allowed.

Wait until you get here so she can pick the "right" style.  There is a much better selection of school shoes here than in the US.
