Mobile/Cell Phone Suggestions
« on: December 01, 2009, 10:11:04 AM »
I am getting a new mobile/cell phone this week because next week will be away for work and need a better option than my PAYG phone right now.

I am looking for any suggestions on either types of phones you like or don't like, and the different networks/tariffs that you have used.  I plan on going with a contract.

Any suggestions, opinions or advice is helpful.

Thanks!

Check your facebook  ;)

This is a picture of mine (got it from Orange) and I really love it.  This specific link is for pay-as-you-go but they offer it for contracts also.

I traded in a touch screen (which I thought would be really cool but hated after I started using it) for that one.

Good luck on your search!

I hav an iphone on contract with O2 and love it, and the service.  As far as phone models go, the current top three contenders in the smart phone area are the iPhone, Blackberry, and Google Android.  I love my iPhone, but have also seen a friend's android in action and it is quite comparable in scope.

I have a Nokia E71 smartphone and love it.  I bought the phone sim-free and use O2's sim-only contract, which I'm happy with.  If you're not wanting to pay for the phone, I know Three does some deals with that model included, not sure about others.

I opted for the E71 because I wanted a QWERTY keyboard, otherwise I probably would have gone for an iPhone.  I absolutely adore my phone though, it has basically all the bells and whistles you could ever want.

Springhaze, I was actually just looking at that phone. :)  Do you think it's bulky at all?... I had contemplated Blackberry, but my husband has me worrying that the phone might be too big...

Same reason I'm looking at it too... I want the qwerty keyboard.  Husband has touchscreen and I find it hard to type/text/web surf with touchscreen.

ETA: I've actually been looking at getting the phone through Tesco.  E71 (free) with an 02 plan of 400 minutes/500 texts a month for £25 and free Wii DJ Hero...I'm really leaning this way.

iphone has a qwerty keyboard on screen which can be enlarged by turning the phone sideways.  Android also has a physical keyboard that slides out from the screen.

Navie- yeah, I'm looking for the physical keyboard... otherwise I'd be all over the iPhone. :)

This may sound daft, but in the US, as far as I remember, you are charged for all minutes used on your phone.  When you call someone or when someone calls you.... Is it the same here?

Not daft at all!  You are not charged for calls you receive.

I'm an iPhone person as well.  But I can understand it's not for everyone. :D

The E71 is actually really slim, not big and bulky in the slightest.  It's got a really nice form factor, better than the iPhone, IMO.

Still looking at phones, and therefore a new question...

Does anyone have the Skype application on their mobile phones? And if so, how does it work?

Yes - You get it with 3-mobile. It's great... Calling other skype users works perfectly and is completely free (even on pay as you go). Also, I have a skype subscription so I can call any US number through skype on my mobile at no charge except my annual subscription payment! Skype-in doesn't work yet (I have a Pittsburgh local number that my parents can call and reach me on skype) - only on my computer. But I spoke to 3-mobile and they said it might work on my new mobile phone. If it doesn't, I'm supposed to take my phone in to them to try to fix it!

I am iphone + blackberry and love them both for different reasons.
Blackberry is awesome for email and really fast at typing long stuff, I really like Ubertwitter on it and it handles my Gmail well.

Iphone handles Gmail brilliantly, I don't really care for any of the twitter aps I've found so far, it's nice not to have to carry my ipod around as well, and I love the app store (a bit too much!). Spotify premium rocks my socks

swings and roundabouts really :)

I ended up going with Motorola Dext and I love it!!! My only gripe so far is that the touchscreen doesn't lock while on the phone, so it kept switching to mute and speaker.... I'm sure there's a way to lock it... however, I haven't found that yet.

Went with Orange- £29 a month for 600 mins, unlimited text, unlimited internet, etc....
And of course am looking forward to my first Orange Wednesday once I'm home from training.....
