There was a book by Ursula Nordstrom called 'A Secret Language' that was about two girls who were living in a girls' boarding school.  I know the teachers and main characters were all female.  One of the two girls was raised only by a mother, but I can't remember if there were any fathers mentioned of any other characters.

Thanks everybody.  I'll pass all these ideas on.  At least I know there isn't a really obvious one that we were missing.  :)

It is interesting.  Most of the strong girl character books also have a central male character - Secret Garden, Little Princess, Little Women.

But there IS a woman in The Wind in the Willows - the Gaoler's daughter.

OH!  So I wonder if there can be men, just not central characters.  That opens it up a bit.

I would think that would have to be the case.  I mean, there probably is a book or two out there that only has characters of one gender, but they've got to be impossible to find.

What about Island of the Blue Dolphins?  There are male characters at the beginning and end, but most of it is just Karana on her own.

I think the Worst Witch series by Jill Murphy has mainly female characters.  They take place in a boarding school for witches, and the main characters are the students (all girls) and the teachers (female).  Although there is probably a wizard in there somewhere.  It's been a long time since I read these.

The trebizon books by Anne Digby, the girl has a dad but he's never in it, later on Rebecca gets a boyfriend I think!

Or Mallory towers?

This is really hard!

Wow!  This is really, really hard!!!  I think someone needs to write a book with only females in it.

Funny, I just watched a film called The Women which was an all female cast. They never showed a male (Kind of), only spoke about them.

I was going to say Mallory Towers but i remember Darrell Rivers dad took someone's appendix out in one of them.

Mindy, I hope you will tell us if you get an "official" answer.

Ballet Slippers by Noel Streatfeild?  I know there's the guy that adopts them, but he's hardly a main character since he's traveling abroad with no contact for most of the book right?  Oh rats, there's that guy who's the boarder.  :-\\\\

What about a Jacqueline Wilson one like Dustbin Baby?  There are male characters but they aren't the central characters.

I can't think of any children's book that has only female characters.  I'll be interested to hear what the right answer is!  :D
