talking of coffee makers - hasn't anyone tried a Bialetti.  you have to search a bit to find one, but it makes the best cup of coffee ever.

My favourite is a ristretto, which all the folks in Italy drink.  Enough coffee for a full cup, but with only about a quarter cup of water.  It's the coffee equivalent of a shot of vodka   :-*.

Anyone here try Greek or Turkish coffee? :o  I haven't, but I've heard the stories!

Right now I'd be happy for some instant.  We ran out last night and Jamie didn't pick any up when he made a run to the store last night.  If I want a hot beverage today it will have to be good ol' English tea! ;D

Mmm - yum yum.

It's easy to make:  use pulverised ground coffee (ground really fine).  Put coffee and water in a small saucepan (make a stronger, rather than weaker combination), add sugar to taste and bring to the boil three or four times, taking it off the heat for a few moments between each boiling.  Pour into coffee cups and leave to settle for a few minutes before drinking, as there is always a lot of sediment in the bottom of the cup

I had Turkish coffee years ago in college. It reminded me of mud and was very bitter.

Hmmmm.....mud.  I stopped eating mud a few years ago....LOL.  Used to love those mud-pies as a kid....but, eeewww....mud doesn't seem to be too yummy of an idea now. :P

I had an iced mocha at Starbuck's this afternoon when we were in Leicester.....now, that was yummy.  But, I also had a perfect mocha this morning.  So, if anyone wants a perfect one, go to Wheeler's in Loughborough....I highly recommend it! ;D

I know you all are gonna not beleive this...  :-\\\\ but I don't understand you guys obsession with coffee...  :o I can't drink it... Just tastes like liquid dirt to me...  :o i've tryed it again and again over the years... even iced and flavored with 20 spoonfuls of sugar heavy on the cream...but I just can't drink it... the closest I have ever come to drinking it is when I let a dish of coffee ice cream melt or when I dipped a plain dunkin donut (remember the ones that had a little handle on em???) into my dad's coffee many many MANY years ago... so the thing i'd like to know is... how did you all aquire your addiction??? did you work you way thru a lil coffee with your sugar to begin with??? or did hate it too when you first started drinking it but appreciated the lil kickstart it gave you in the morning so you drank it anyway??? just curious    Jo

I always hated coffee. Then I started the job I'm at now about 3.5 years ago. When I first started working there everybody would laugh and tell me I'd eventually end up drinking coffee working there. I said no way would I ever. I'd tried it over and over throughout my life and hated it. Even hated coffee flavored stuff. Then one day it was really cold and our heat was out and I decided to drink some just to warm up. I put lots of sugar and creamer in it and it wasn't too bad. Now I have coffee every morning at work and I'm in a foul mood if I don't. Who knows why. I still don't go to Starbucks or seek out coffee flavored stuff but I love my one cup of coffee each morning while doing the reports at work. :)

I looked at the link... those coffee makers look smart.  BUt how do you use them?  Are they stove-top or electric?  Can you give me a quick run-down on how they work?

I was never into coffee, ever, until i went to Italy... and then i couldnt get enough of it.  But i cant work out how to make it the same way here, so i've given up on coffee again...

how did you all aquire your addiction???

Hi, my name is Anne and I'm addicted to coffee.

I grew up in a town in No. California where there was NOTHING for high school kids to do and no where to go at night, so my misanthrope friends and I started hanging out at a local cafe, being pretentious and talking about, in turns, the virtues of everything from James Joyce to The Jesus And Mary Chain until the place shut at midnight. It was sort of like Cheers - you knew everyone there and could go by at any time and find someone. That continued well into my community college days and over the course of those three or four years I developed my addiction. I never did sugar in great quantities, but I did start on lattes and moved on to the hard stuff. Now I can't start my day without a good, strong, black cup (or two). I tried to give up a long time ago, but the headache and feeling of deprivation of my beloved morning ritual just didn't seem worth it.  ;D

Jo, I started drinking coffee when I was a little kid. I remember having it in the morning when I was about 6 years old, imitating the way my dad made slurping noises when he sipped it. I got out of the habit when I was in my teens, then loved going to funky little coffee bars when I as at university and then started having a cup every morning when I started teaching.

As far back as I can remember, I have loved the smell of coffee, loved coffee flavoured things, and loved the ritual of making coffee. I love brewing methods from all over the world, particularly those kinds that are messy and overly complicated. LOL I am always amazed at how many different ways people have devised for straining some hot water through a few granules.

One of my long-standing memories of my father revolves around coffee ...

He was a volunteer fireman at our local fire department and after a call, he'd always come back and have a cup of coffee.  I thought I would surprise my father with a cup of coffee waiting for him when he came back.

In my six year old mind, I figured that instant coffee must be a little like instant hot chocolate -- the more your added the better it tasted.  So I put three huge spoonfuls of instant coffee in one of those little white styrofoam cups and added the milk and water.

I can remember handing it to him, and him smiling and thanking me.  I also remember the bulging eyes when he took a sip.  I thought that meant it was extra good.

Thirty years later, I understand the look on his face, but it's still a very nice memory.

I can happily blame my Grandfather.  He was from the belief that children should be SEEN and NOT heard soooo...... spending time with him was always interesting -- especially if he was in a bad mood!  One thing he did share with me was COFFEE!!!  I would spend summers with my grandparents and in the morning he would be sitting in the kitchen -- I would meekly walk in -- knowing it was just him -- hoping he was in a GOOD mood.  All he would do was put bread in the toaster -- and pour me a "cup of joe."  At the time is was mostly milk but still --- coffee.  We would sit in the kitchen together eating our toast, drinking coffee and listening to the radio.  Even to this day -- the smell of toast, coffee and a cigarette (I don't smoke but if you go to a diner....oh......)  brings me right back to that kitchen!!!  It's one of my BEST memories!

Much to my Mother's HORROR - I always asked for a cup of coffee -- just to have that memory invoked through taste!

I'm no coffee snob by no means--- I'm more of a plain ol' java junkie!!!
My hubs has wondered if I should be put forward for scientific study.  I can drink coffee just before going to bed and still sleep.  He can't figure it out! ;)

Jo, I don't ever remember a time not liking coffee.  As I said in my first post in this thread, my mother was encouraged to give it to me as a baby by my doctor.  The first coffee I had was served to me in a bottle!  I yummed it up then....and, I still do.
