Tim liked the whiz so much he asked me to bring a jar along when I move....but I also introduced him to Cheeze whiz as a chip dip before we got cheesesteaks so he knew what he was getting into ;)

That is an excellent idea.   ;) I think I'll do that, plus then we'll have a jar of cheesewhiz that we can use to make our own cheesesteaks later.

By Joe's cheesesteaks did you mean Geno's?  Just googled for Joe's and couldn't find any listings except for one in Idaho.  ???

A Philly cheesesteak is ...

I had kind of guessed what they are...

A doner kebab is a kind of Turkish/Middle Eastern lamb and garlic meatloaf which is cooked on a rotisserie and sliced into pitta bread and served with salad and chili sauce. Very popular in the Uk for after the pub. What I meant was they are both greasy, and deplorable both for your heart and your waistline but sometimes you just can't resist one.

LOL, yes I did! I wanted to write Geno's, but I kept thinking that was wrong sp I changed it to Joe.  Whoops.

Then yes, they are similar, although cheesesteak consumption is typically at lunch time.  I thought you meant they were similar in ingredients.

From a former Pennsylvanian, this is blasphemy!!! Donor kebabs are pretty much the same wherever you go, whether you're in England, Ireland, Scotland, etc. We PA-ers take our cheesesteaks pretty seriously! Depending on where you are in PA you'll find them made differently and you can't get a good cheesesteak south of the Mason Dixon line! I used to drive to my parent's in PA from Baltimore just for a good sub! I prefer the central PA version of the cheesesteak over the Philly Cheez Whiz version, but that's just how I grew up. We do ours with provolone and the roll is actually made from pizza dough and most pizza/sub shops make their own rolls. The rolls are a bit denser and crustier on the outside than what you'll get in Philly.

Man, I miss the pizza shop!!!

We had a local deli on the Eastern Shore of MD that made the scrummiest cheesesteaks!  Provolone and all!

Man...I wish I was there to test this theory! For me, it's all in the bread and I never found a place outside of central PA that made that type of bread.

Well, you'd be disappointed with the bread, I'm afraid!  Normal sub bread.

But if you're ever back in Maryland and head towards OC, then Route 50 in a town called Easton.  Used to be on left hand side of the road, next to 7/11.

Me, I'm a fried onions, fried peppers and hot peppers (not those seedy things) kinda-gal.

I'm more of a cheesesteak hoagie kinda gal: raw onions, lettuce (hold the tomatoes), and mayo. But at this point, I'd eat any type of cheesesteak!

Where would you suggest going?  I'm a bit loyal to Pat's so think I'll need to take DH there for his first cheese steak, but if he loves them as much as I'm sure he will we'd both love comparing Pat's to other venues, you know, in the name of science...  ::)

I'm from the Philly area and went to HS in Philly and I've never heard of the term "dirty cheese steak"

I take mine with provolone, but most people do cheese wiz.

Sorry but... yuck!!!

Might as well just open the salt shaker & pour it straight down your throat, because that's all that Cheez Whiz tastes of, to me.  In the interest of science, however, I just looked it up, and indeed a mere 2 Tablespoon serving of the stuff contains 541 mg of sodium!  :o  That's 1/4 of the recommended daily intake for sodium assuming you eat 2,000 calories - in only 2 Tablespoons of 'food'.  :P

Ah a nice old thread about cheesesteaks, my hub has such a girly stomach (lives on carrots and hummus unless I am cookin). Central pa has the wussie pizzera type chesesteaks but honestly I prefer them, mmm mushrooms and even "California" style with lettuce and tomato. And hate to admit it but I prefer ketchup on mine, yum.
