Tim and I did a lot of long weekends when I was there fire6 months, as he got a long weekend every 28 days.

Our two favourite weekends were the ones spent exploring the Northeast - Alnwick, Newcastle, Beamish, York, North Yorkshire Moors, Robin Hood's Bay, etc. We just drove around and stayed at bed & breakfasts along the way.

I have to second this - Northumberland and Yorkshire (my favorite place on EARTH) are to die for! Full of history and beauty!

For somewhere closer to home, I will always recommend Cambridge - maybe I am biased because I studied abroad there, but it is a magical, historical, lovely place. Only 45 mins from London by train!

I'd second York! It's gorgeous, tons to do, some very good places to eat, and you can always spend some time in Manchester as well if you wanted to do a "big city" night at the end or something.

I just wanted to say - both Bath and Cornwall are excellent suggestions. If you do Cornwall try Carbis Bay.  It's really close to St.Ives and has the most amazing beach -

I live in the next village over from Carbis Bay and it is indeed gorgeous down here. However, I'd save a Cornish trip for summertime, to be honest. The beaches here are lovely even in winter, but I think the OP would enjoy it more in warmer weather.

Bath would definitely get my vote. No question.

My two favorite (and in my opinion, romantic) places in the UK are The Lake District and Devon (we usually end up in Dartmoor). Both are so beautiful! and the pace of life is very relaxing - makes for a great get away.

Have fun, wherever you go!
