Go into "Edit my profile"
Once you're there, uncheck the "show friends on my profile" box

That only hides your friends list from your profile, but it will still show up when people search for your name.

It might be that yours hasn't changed yet, like mine?  Here is the official word on Facebook's site:

Publicly available information

Making connections—finding people you know, learning about people, searching for what people are saying about topics that interest you—is at the core of our product. This can only happen when people make their information available and choose to share more openly.

Almost everyone on Facebook today is already sharing some information with everyone, including their Name, Profile Picture, Friend List and Networks. This list of info is expanding to make it easier for you to find and connect with the people you're looking for. This will also help you learn some basic things about the people around you, like where they're from or who their friends are.

You can still hide yourself from Facebook Search results, but your publicly available information—Name, Profile Picture, Networks, Current City, Gender, Friend List, and Pages—will now be visible to anyone visiting your profile.

G, from that link you sent earlier

Facebook also counters that users can still control whether non-friends can see your Friends List by going into the hard-to-find profile editing settings on your profile page and changing the number of friends displayed on the public version of your profile to "0" unchecking the new check-box in your Friends setting that says "show my friends on my profile". However, if the goal with these changes was to clarify the privacy settings and make them easier to find and use, then Facebook has completely failed when it comes to controlling who sees who you are friends with. And even if you do have some control over whether non-friends can see your friends list — if you hunt around and can find the right setting, which is no longer under "Privacy Settings" — Facebook has made the privacy situation even worse when it comes to information sharing with the developers of Facebook apps.

I checked my profile before doing this and it showed my friends and then I did afterwards and they don't show up...   ???

Yes, mine too but what about when a random person searches your name? Facebook is claiming the Publicly Available Info will show up, and that includes the friend list.  And how can you hide other things, like network, pages, gender, etc? According to Facebook, you can't hide that any longer.  :-\\\\

I can't understand the purpose of making that information public? If people don't want it shown, then why can't they hide it? Only thing that makes sense is if they are simply thinking in terms of advertisers targeting users?
