How does that work? (getting a US insurance company to recognize non-US private insurance)?  Will US companies recognize foreign insurers like BUPA as continuing coverage for pre-existing conditions and the like?

I tried to set up US health insurance before we moved so that may have been part of the problem. I was working with them online and after that initial contact it was via the phone and e-mails back and forth. The company had a few requirements that we had to meet up front, such as having resided 30 days in the US before we could get coverage, and being willing to submit for their health exam. We knew all that up front and agreed to it, and they knew up front DH was a UK citizen and that neither of us had been living in the US for nearly 5 yrs. Not once did they mention this would be a problem so 'bait and switch' comes to mind because once we were in the US the pressure was on to get insurance quickly.

Neither DH nor I had BUPA in the UK so I have no way of knowing if that would be recognized. The Assurant coverage we finally got through State Farm didn't require any proof of US recognized coverage although we did have a few of the won't-be-covered clauses for anything we'd seen a doctor for during the last 2 years (I think it was a 2 yr time frame but now that part is foggy).

We used a broker, and had our insurance set up before we moved back to the US. We didn't have to do any exams, and while my husband (UKC) had a harder time and went with Assurant after a year we were able to add him on the plan I had for him and my son (who is a dual UK/USC)
