volvo expat sales?
« on: August 03, 2004, 10:27:44 AM »
has any american who has already moved to the US purchased a car under the volvo (or any other company) expat program? program is advertised as saving lots off of the US sticker price. we are interested and intend to do actual price research with a US dealer, but wondered if anyone else has been through this already?

thanks.

The only program I know about is intlauto.com (International Auto Source) - is that what you are talking about? Or does volvo have their own program?

Ive not done this but I have looked into it with International Auto Source and it seems very gimmicky and Im not convinced you can get a better price just by going though them. Totally look into it, but take it with a pinch of salt. On the good side of it I have heard of one person who bought an older car though a scheme like this, maybe it was IAS, and they had very good luck. So let us know how things go.

IAS don't do used cars anymore - I've had several phone conversations with a guy from there who was really helpful actually - we're not going to do it because we really don't want a brand new car - and that's all they do now.

yeah although a Dodge Viper sounds really nice, I think Martin and I are going to embrace the Texan lifestyle and get an old beat up pickup truck from 1974 or a big honking black SUV with tinted windows and a gun rack thats a couple of years old lol

the volvo info is pretty straightforward;i guess it is just a way of taking advantage of the 'duty free' allowance that you have for a car when you move back to the US.  and you also skip the taxes in the UK. fyi, bmw , mercedes, and saab also have the same programs. haven't checked those out in detail yet, but we will be doing the volvo thing in the next year or so. hopefully... if we ever get to move.
