My no. 1 pet peeve:
Customer: "Where does that accent come from?"
Me: "America"
Customer: "Oh I know that! I meant what part!"

Oh yeah. I just tell them Phoenix. They never know it and it shuts them up. I do the get odd Florida remark but I tell them that Phoenix is on the other side of the country and the conversation doesn't go further.

Probably Hollister :P. Have they followed Abercrombie across the ocean yet?

hmmm.....i haven't seen hollister or abercrombie(but, i'm not in any position to wear any of their clothes because i'm too old and can't fit into any of them, so, i've never looked-LOL!) but, now that i think of it, i did see an urban outfitters in manchester, along with gap and a billabong shop in chester.

There is a Hollister store at the Westfield mall in West London! Boy, was that a surprise. I grew up in California - and Hollister was the po-dunk town!(Where "The Wild One" with Marlon Brando was filmed) Now it's a clothing brand! Yikes!

I live in a city near Glasgow and on a daily basis I have to ask the person next to me what the random stranger just said.  It's much worse if Hubby and I have been out for the night and are taking the bus home and some drunken man starts talking to us.  It must be that their accent just gets worse the more beer they drink, hahaha.  At work there is usually at least one person a day (I am a Manager at a clothing store) who I can't understand when they start talking to me so I just smile and nod then ask the girls later on what they said.  The girls of course crack up at me for not understand so again I just smile and nod.

I wish I could figure out how to speak with a Scottish accent just so that every customer I come into contact with would stop asking me where my accent is from.and concentrate on what I'm trying to sell them.

Oh really?  Do you actually know I'm American and not Canadian because I grew up there and I don't even know the difference.  Wow you, along with the majority of everyone else, must be a linguistic specialist.  ::)   Not to mention every other person thinks I'm Canadian, though I do get the occasional Australian and Irish O_o

I once got, "wow! That's a good West Country accent!"
me: "Very, very west....."

I just confuse people because my speech patterns are (and have always been) rather English... but I have an obvious American accent.  Of course, people back in the States thought I was from Seattle rather than Dallas (never been to Seattle!), so I guess I managed to cultivate a rather non-accent? *laughs*  But anytime I open my mouth around someone new, I get a double-take + "Excuse me?", after which I have to repeat myself... I hates repeating myself!  :-X  But generally, it seems that people just think I'm a Brit who was in the States long enough to pick up an American accent and not shake it.

That would make sense-Westfield is a huge mall conglomerate in the States and usually has "the best" of mall stores. I don't know if it's necessarily the same here, but, it would make sense. You're right about Hollister in California being a po-dunk town. In San Diego, Hollister Street was the street of my old naff highschool, and continued into a long street in one of the dodgy neighborhoods. So funny that it's a clothing brand, indeed!

I met an amazingly fun American girl here, she lives right down the road and her husband is in UB40!  She and I gushed and said "AWESOME!" and high-fived a lot, just because we make each other feel so...American...heheh.

There is one other American girl in town that I know of, but she has lived here for a very long time and doesn't see being one of the few Americans here as a bonding point. Oh well, girl #1 rules!

Other than those two, I have heard a few yank accents while walking around town but mostly, I'm living in Limeyville, which I don't mind:)

How are you enjoying Hastings? We lived there once, miss the sea but my DH couldn't run fast enough, we still head down every few weeks to see friends and to go to that cute little tapas place they have

Both places sound cool-DH and his family had at least one holiday in Brighton. Anywhere near a coast line would be grand, I think!
