Ha! I always find it funny how people are surprised that Brooklyn/Queens/Long Island are all on the same land mass! But I imagine as locals, we probably are the only ones who care that much about the distinction. I remember in junior high/high school, we always associated Long Island with much richer people, despite the fact that it had it's pockets of lower income neighborhoods, just like any place else. And I used to get teased that where I grew up was "less Queens" because it was on the border of Nassau County, so people seemed to think my family had more money. Meanwhile, all we had was a super long commute! (But, a backyard.) My parents grew up in poor sections of Brooklyn and Queens, so they were determined that we wouldn't grow up those areas.
So anytime any one of my friends from here takes a trip over and travels to any other borough than Manhattan, it makes me happy. They have a lot to offer!
