Mom or Mum?
« on: December 14, 2009, 07:04:27 PM »
Okay... so as a new mom, I guess I need to decide what I want my son to call me. Do most of you just go with mom? At first I thought I'd feel a bit silly going with "mum" but after spending 6 weeks being called "mum" by the nurses in SCBU who didn't bother learning my name I'm used to it. And, I suppose all of Isaac's friends will have "mums" and you can't find a card around here with "mom" on it.. so?

I'm curious as to what those of you with babies born in the UK have your children call you.

Hmm...good question.  A lot of people where we live (northern-ish England) actually say "Mam" (just to throw another curveball in the mixture.  I'll probably go with mama or mommy since that's what my daughter calls me so the new baby will probably take after her on a lot of things.

They call me Mum... I don't think it can be helped, to be honest...it's all they're going to hear wherever they go, unless you make a conscious decision to correct them everytime they say Mum.

I'm most definitely Mummy, with an accent on the Manc. The kid decided for himself, as this is what his peers call their Mothers. Its okay with me! So long as he still gives me lots of hugs and kisses and says I am the best, its all good!

I'm Mom or Momma, of course she's only 18 months so that could change as she gets older.

Never had this problem as to New Englanders (of my generation anyway) it was always "Mum" ! I also had "ahnts" and not "ants".

I've been thinkng the same thing.  My little guy is only 5 months so it will be a while before it becomes confusing but I currently refer to myself as mommy or mummy depending on how American I'm feeling at that given moment.  I don't mind either way and I just assume he'll go with mummy/mum.

I'm usually Mummy, but on occasion Mommy. I call myself Mommy. (To him)

I'm not bothered to be honest.  He can call me either. ;D

I'm aiming for Mom/Mommy, if only to cling on to a bit of home//not displace my mother-in-law as Mum.  Of course, she herself can't seem to be able to say Mom...

I don't think it's something you can control entirely.  Like StephanieLea said, children pick up the accents and pronounciations of their peers.

I was raised by Brits in the US and don't have a single Brit pronounciation by nature.  Part of being born and raised in one specific country is sounding like a native  :)

It wasn't until I moved here that I realized they have different accents, but to me they just sound like mom and dad.  I barely notice that they have accents at all.
...the whole damn thing will turn
and return redefined, rearranged, rearranged...

I was Mommy in the UK and obviously it's stuck now that we're in the US. However, it is something that, if we'd stayed in the UK, I felt quite strongly about and would have worked to keep it that way. As a child, I had many friends from different countries. At school they called their mother or father whatever the local term was. But at home, when addressing their parent, they used the word their language or parent preferred.

I'm a firm believer that parents and adults should be addressed by the name or term they prefer.

I personally can't stand 'Mummy' as it just always conjures up images of Halloween mummies! But I accept that this is my personal thing and not everyone else feels the same! ;)
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I'm mummy!!!
Being a teacher and hearing all the children talk about their mum/mummy it just seemed natural, and when we're in the US and I get called mommy it sounds strange :)
I think my mom thought she'd get my daughter saying mommy in the 7wks we were there this summer (she was 20 months at the time) but no luck :)
