American chains in England?
« on: December 15, 2009, 02:38:16 PM »
Fiance and I are flying to England this weekend for the holidays- meeting his family and scoping out possible places to settle down. As you may know, I've been living in Tokyo for the past two years and I was wondering what kinds of American chain restaurants I can get in England? FH has told me about:
McDonald's (of course)
Subway
Burger King
Pizza Hut
KFC
(We have all these in Japan, incidentally...)

I heard Chipotle is coming, has that opened yet? I would kiiiiiiiiill for some Cinnabon or a meal at Chili's or a Wetzel's Pretzel's or Mrs. Field's cookies or Panda Express or Pinkberry etc. etc. etc.! FH hasn't been home in a while so he doesn't really know what's around anymore. If it helps I'm going to London, Brighton, and around the Colchester/Witham area of Essex. If there are any little hidden gems of America around, I'd greatly appreciate the tips!
An American. With an English fiance. Living and working in Tokyo since 2007. Getting hitched in October 2010. Still haven't decided where to settle down- America or England? Fun, fun, fun!

We used to have Chilis but they seem to have closed all their UK branches recently. TGI Fridays is still here. If you're going to be in Brighton you may wish to check out this place, I've heard it's excellent:

Just outside Brighton in Burgess Hill is Papa John's which, incidently, is the best pizza on the planet.

TGI Fridays in Croydon

Frankie and Bennys (might be the name, might be how you spell it)   are a bit further west.

It has closed. It was really great but overpriced, then post Gordon Ramsay it was really really good, then went kinda rubbish after they moved premises.

Shame really.

There's a F&Bs in Brighton. I wouldn't bother though if I were you!

Um...

Krispy Kreme?

Oh sorry, I didn't know Momma Cherri's was closed.

Ok mmmmm. how about:

Dominos
Baskin Robbins
Ben & Jerry

There are a load of American style places around, especially in London, although they're not necessarily American chains, eg Ed's Diner, Bodeans, Texas Embassy ...

We have two Frankie & Benny's in Newcastle. The one at the Gate is utter rubbish. Crap food and service. And less than a mile away is the one off Northumberland St., and it is fantastic! Mmm!

Interesting! I went once in brighton to the one which I think is now closed by the station and it was really lame, as was the one I went to (admittedly at like midnight) in Stansted airport, but that may have been too small a sample to judge!

on the other hand, TGI fridays in Fulham is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me and the boy, starters and deserts baby!

In Old Eldon Square, 2nd level by the big Boots and John Lewis. I'll show you next time you come to town. We can share a cinnamon pretzel or a pretzeldog. :D

There is a pretzel stand upstairs at Reading station too, although I can't remember what brand. Actually Reading has quite a lot of American or American style eateries, especially by the river behind the Oracle mall, incl. Krispy Kreme, Old Orleans, Las Iguanas, Tootsies, Mission Mexican Grill.
