Bachelorette Party Help
« on: December 21, 2009, 09:43:10 AM »
Hey guys,

As many of you know, I am heading back to the States for my big brother's wedding to one of my closest friends. ;D  I get in on the 29th at 11pm... I have been communicating with the maid of honor (I'm the only other bridesmaid) and so far it's looking like the bachelorette party/bridal shower will be the next day.  :-X I already said that I would provide food (I think I'm the only one of her friends with any cooking talent whatsoever) but obviously the time constraints are quite big. Anyone have some ideas of party food that I could make on the day? Keep in mind that we will also be running the rehearsal the same day!

So far I'm thinking of making Hot Artichoke and Red pepper dip and maybe some cold Spinach Dip. So dip is pretty well covered. It's the other stuff I need help with!

Thanks in advance. :)

Since you're not in until late the night before, have you considered contacting one of their local supermarkets and having some party trays made up...simple like veggie ones, meat & cheese trays, and then you could just pick up some salads as well (potato, macaroni & such) and then a bunch of chips/crisps...Heck even pizza is always a hit at least at the redneck parties I've been to...oh and wine/beer/spirits/sodas depending on the crowd type.

Most of the bachelorette parties I've ever been to always just had snack food. Pretty much the kind of stuff Weby suggested. Wings are always a big hit for my friends as well.

Ooh, good suggestion! I worked at the local supermarket until I moved, so that would be extremely easy for me. The only thing is the cost - trying to do this on a pretty tight budget. I know those things run kind of expensive... They did have smaller cheese and meat/veggie platters that would be perfect for this crowd size though! And hey, it might be cheaper to make my own platters. Thanks Weby. :)

I can also enlist my mom to do some of the prep the day before to make things easier - so I could make my own potato/pasta salad/coleslaw. Hmmm...

I'm thinking of making some Alfredo, just to have a nice homemade hot dish that won't take too much time. So, it seems like I should have enough food!

Yeah, it's kind of a mix between bachelorette party/bridal shower. We can't go out because her maid of honor is 8-months preggo! So I'd like it to be a bit more refined than usual. :) Thinking more of a Buffet for the food. Wings may go over well with my future SIL though. And I know some places who have great deals in the area... Thanks!

How about a tartlet? Get some ready roll, roll it out on a baking tray, prick all over leaving a border which you can roll in if you want, spread with caramelised onion marmalade (I get mine at waitrose but I, top with cheese, one that melts well, so like Gruyere, dry mozerella, fontina, or a blue cheese, you could also add tomato slices as well.

Bake....

Once out of the oven top with rocket and serve, looks great and meat eaters and veggies both like it :) You could do a few different toppings if you wanted with different cheeses or some nice prosciutto.

You could also do home made snausage rolls  with any left over puff pastry, they always go down a treat (use links or sausage meat)

Cous Cous? With some sundried tomatoes and feta would be cheap for a large portion.

Oooooh the tartlet sounds so fancy. :P I might have to do that... the puff pastry back home comes in ready to use sheets so it would be super quick too. I think I would have to find an alternative to the carmelised onion marmalade (or go to waitrose and take it with me?) but maybe a pesto or something? Great idea. :)

The sausage rolls - i dunno if I could find sausage that would match the greatness of the ones they use here, maybe breakfast sausage?

I find couscous to be very expensive in the States in comparison... It's less popular, and I don't know anyone else there who actually eats it. :( It's a shame - I love it. But I think I'm going to do a pasta salad with a homemade vinagrette and chopped veggies. So that is kind of similar. Some feta would go great in it, too...

Cous cous, expensive?! Well that's a bugger! You could take a couple of packs of the ready made stuff, I like the lemon, garlic coriander which is about 50p a bag, 2 or 3 bags and you'd have enough to feed an army, the  good thing is if you put it in a bowl, poor boiling water on it (packet instructions) then put a plate over the top for 10 minutes it always cooks perfectly, then once it's cooled add some herbed chopped feta and it's delish.

I use the ready roll sheet pastry as well! I find it's almost the same size as a baking tray, so you just unroll it - perfect :D

Hmm, you could caramelise your own onions, but that would take time, is caramelised onion marmalade not common out there? That's a pain :/ They have it in big Tescos as well if you're taking it with you :)

You could use breakfast sausage, if you want them less fatty, make the sausage into cylinders, then cook them first (drain the fat) and leave to cool, then wrap a thin strip of pastry around it in a spiral and re bake. You could spice up the sausage meat by including fresh sage before you cook it.

Pesto would work well, with mozzarella and sun blush tomatoes (god I love sun blush tomatoes, on everything), or you could use a marinara sauce and put cheese and thin sliced saucisson or Italian ham on (like a pizza tart) , whatever you do, make sure you throw the rocket on, it makes it look fancier! :) also make sure the wet sauce is fairly thin (but well coated).

I just realised I have such a bad cheese obsession!

Do they have the ready done bread mixes out there? That just need water adding? As if so you could do a quick home made pizza which always looks impressive.

If you're doing canapés then here's some ideas :

Tortellini wrapped in a sage leaf and parma ham - Get some good tortellini (pre made) cook, wrap in a sage leaf and parma ham, then serve on a tooth pick.

Bruschetta/crostini - I really like white bean bruschetta or baby artichoke bruschetta, a lot of this you can buy ready made then just rub the bread with garlic, toast, top and serve.Look at the fresh dips they sell in the supermarket a lot of these would make great toppings, then whack some cheese or chopped tomato on top and they look really fancy/taste great.

Baked mushrooms - top with cheese, garlic, whatever else you have, oven and serve

A quiche -  if you use ready made pastry then quiches are really easy  - put the filling in that you want (mushroom, leeks, onions, bacon etc) and then mix 2 eggs  with some milk/cream/soft cheese like you would if you were making an omelette and pour that on top with lots of black pepper.

Chicken Satay! (bring the skewers with you, as I never saw them in the US)

Cheats Paella (arroz con pollo) - Use this stuff - http://www.mysupermarket.co.uk/Images/ExternalImages/ProductsDetailed/38/027038.jpg

- Fry sliced Chorizo until the oil is released
- Throw in some onion and some diced bell pepper
- add diced chicken breasts (I actually like chicken thights)
- when nearly cooked through add the rice and water as in packet instructions
-  when the rice is nearly cooked add any seafood that needs flash cooking like squid.

Serve :) It's not an authentic paella but is blooming tasty. My Spanish flatmate used to do it all the time :)

M, you are a fountain of food knowledge. ;D This is mostly stuff that I would never think to make so this is sooo helpful !

Your idea for the sausage rolls sounds amazing... I might have to do that.

As for the pizza, my father makes the best pizza dough in the world (seriously, people have cried with joy upon tasting) so I would just get him to whip up a batch. :) That might be good, b/c I can just bring it over there early, all prepped, and shove it in her oven.

Quiche seems like a great idea, too. Again, my mother makes great quiche and it's just sooo easy. So I would just have to dig out her recipe and make it in the morning. Seems very fitting for the occasion and good for my time issues. That's def. going on the list.

Chicken satay - We do have skewers in the US! You must be looking in the wrong section. :) I might consider this as an alternative to wings. Think I'll give the bride-to-be a choice!

I'll just bring a whole list of ideas and decide what I have time for on the day. Jet lag will definitely play a role, and I'm waiting to see the exact number of people coming to this thing. Communication hasn't been too great so far... Of course, I am in another country!

Thanks a bunch, M. It's a shame I didn't get to spend much time with you at the meet-up. :( Had I known you weren't coming with us to dinner I would have come to sit on the other side of the table for a bit!

I think the dips sound nice, along with a cheese plate, bowls of mixed nuts, olives, etc. maybe a fruit salad of some sort, and you could always do some quick cheese straws or palmiers with the ready-made puff pastry and baking some cookies or muffins wouldn't take too long. And, of course, all of cheesebiscuits ideas rock! :)

I can see her at US Customs now... "So, ma'am, what are these sticks for? They could be considered a weapon." "Uh, well, they're for my chicken satay!" "What's chicken satay??!" For some reason this image struck me as funny! :D

And cheesebiscuit, I am going to need to try your onion tarte. I LOVE onions and tartes! I don't know if we have the marmalade here... we do have some onion-y sweet products, though.

PL- I totally eat couscous! Lots of people here eat it! You can get dry (cook with water for 5 mins) in the supermarket for like $2 or ready made in the deli area for maybe $3 or $4? I always make the dry (with seasoning) kind and add in some of the stuff they suggest on the back to make it more hearty. SO easy peasy! And I'm very happy to hear you were able to come back for the wedding!!! YAY! And at New Years. :) Fun!

Maybe it's just my area. You can get it dry, but the boxes are tiny/expensive in comparison to what you get here. (I think I paid about 50p for a box about 20 times the size what I would buy in the US for like $3.)  I suppose it's not that expensive, but it is certainly not popular where I'm from. Most people I know have never even tried it! And my FSIL is somewhat fussy, so I don't think that would go over well. :P

And thanks :) I'm really excited! It's a shame I can't spend new years with my hubby. But my best friend will be in town so it will be our first new years together! (She and I have been in a long-distance "relationship" since I was 5. :P ) Definitely lots to look forward to!

I would go crockpot central - Chili with cornbread and dips and chips...
You could have fritos and cheese and sour cream for chili and if you felt adventurous have some hot dogs for chili dogs.

Just my 2 cents for an EASY options ;-)

That sounds nice, but believe it or not - my family does not even own 1 crockpot  :-X My family is SO into cooking, but my mother hates crockpots for some reason...

Chili is another good idea though. I could take a big pot of it over... Thanks :)

ONLY thing that comes to mind with chili.... is the aftereffects- heartburn? um, effects of beans... ? Might not be best before the wedding. But yum. I want some chili!

And how exciting about meeting up with your long time friend. :) Sounds like things are working out perfectly (except for DH not being there...) :)

It's lush! It's good for me when I have vegetarian and carnivorous friends over :) Everyone must eat onions and cheese! :)

You could make the onions yourself, it's easy to caramelise onions, if you do it, i'd recommend using red onions :) Otherwise try looking for an onion chutney maybe? :)

This is the one I like :
http://www.ocado.com/webshop/product/Caramelised-Onion-Waitrose/27291011?parentContainer=SEARCHCaramelised%20Oni

Which I think is a chutney technically :)
