how to make collect call?
« on: December 23, 2009, 05:55:55 PM »
I want to make a collect call to my student loan company back in the US.  They have said they will accept any collect call from outside the US to their phone number.  Only thing is I can not figure out how to go about doing so.  I tried asking Vodofone, but it is like I was speaking a different language or something.

Does anyone know how to make a collect call from the UK to the US via my mobile?

Thanks :)

I think you can do international collect calls from landlines. Not quite sure, though.
"As I write, highly civilized human beings are flying overhead, trying to kill me.

They do not feel any enmity against me as an individual, nor I against them. They are ‘only doing their duty’, as the saying goes. Most of them, I have no doubt, are kind-hearted law-abiding men who would never dream of committing murder in private life."

In the UK, it's known as making a 'reverse charge' call rather than a 'collect call', so maybe that's why Vodafone didn't know what you were talking about? Not sure if you can do it from a mobile or not though.

I made a collect call to a US number when I was visiting in November. I don't remember if I used a mobile or the landline, but all I did was press 001 and then the regular phone number, and listened to a pre-recorded voice saying they accepted all collect calls and then I was on the line with someone. I haven't heard screams from my family about phone bills, so I'm assuming it worked out fine. ;)

Thanks so much for that - everyday, I learn something new with US to UK translations.

I spoke to Vodofone.  They said while other moblie and land line companies offer that service, their system is not currently set up to handle reverse charge calls, yet. :(

What about calling the student loans company using Skype on your computer? It won't be a collect call, but if you're calling a landline number in the US, then it should only cost 1.3p per minute :). In comparison, if I call the US from my landline it costs me 22p per minute!

After learning from Vodofone, they are not set up to handle "reverse charge" calls, I learned I can call from my landling to this AT&T UK access number

0-800-89-0011

And I can ask for an operator and give them the US number and the call will go through as a collect or reverse charge call.

I called the international operator 00 or 01 I think, from our land line (free call), and someone answered. I asked to place a collect call, gave them the number, and they patched me through.

One thing I did notice, is when the connection fee is £8+ and the calls are £3/minute, you don't have to wait on held forever to speak to a representative! I was calling my credit card company in the US.
