Classic board games
« on: December 26, 2009, 11:18:52 PM »
After one too many crappy-plastic-battery-needing-pieces-of-shite toys, I've decided that I'd like to invest in some classic, fun family board games - especially since my boys are getting older. I'd love to hear any tried and true suggestions!

Here's my list so far:
1. Mastermind
2. Othello
3. Clue
4. Scrabble
5. Rummykub
6. Monopoly
7. Yahtzee
8. Perfection

What else am I missing from my youth?  :) And other more recent game suggestions welcome, too!

I always liked Life too...I don't know if you'd technically call them 'board' games, but what about ones like Twister, Guess Who, Battle Ship or Operation.  It is a newer game, but the children I work with love Cranium- there are a few different kinds- we have Conga and Cadoo (a little tip though is that it comes with clay that you need for some of the tasks, but it seemed to dry out really quickly, so we just replaced it with regular Play-Doh and that works great!).

Cranium is a good game for older children 12 and up. I also like Aggravation good fun and easy for young kids to play. I know for me as a kid My favorite board game was Candy Land.

All great suggestions so far! I LOVE playing board games!

I loved 'Life' and got to play it with my nephews this summer! We used to play 'Boggle' at my grandparent's house and that was always good fun. Definitely 'Twister'! My youngest nephew (he's 5) enjoys 'Hi Ho Cherri-O!' and there's always 'Candy Land' and 'Shutes and Ladders'. That being said, my nephews are probably most into card games like 'UNO' and 'Rook' and if you're from PA, 'Dutch Blitz'  ;).

I liked a lot that have already been mentioned, but another favourite was crokinole (though I think it might just be a Canadian thing). I was OBSESSED with it!  ;D

I like the old classics but I also like the different kids Cranium games.  They're very interactive and there's a lot of conversation and you learn a lot about your kids.

Most of those already mentioned, especially Trivial Pursuit, Clue, and Life, but I also had a really favourite game called Stratego.  I used to have to beg my sisters to play that one.  It was a bit of a guyish war game, but I loved it for some reason.

Which reminds me...Risk and Battleship.

In my teens, I became more of a tabletop RPG player (not sure if you count those as "board games") followed by a huge obsession with most card games.

ETA: A friend of mine found an old game called Mastermind in a second hand shop, and every time I go visit her we spend at least one night playing it.

Scrabble is my all-time fave, along with Monopoly, and I love Yahtzee and Boggle. Used to play Risk sometimes, it takes forever to play, though! Also, ahem, Grass is a lot of fun. It's a card game where you are a pot dealer and you can steal your neighbour's pot and stuff.  :P Not exactly kid friendly, though!
