New Years Eve and Day Traditions?
« on: December 27, 2009, 08:49:49 PM »
Since New Years is right around the corner do you have any traditions? or ones you would like to make traditions besides the midnight kiss?

If you can't tel I am a tradition person - I love hearing all about traditions for every holiday/birthday ect...I think to incorporate traditions from so many from all over the world truly makes it individual.

Not sure if this is maybe just a Scottish thing?
Cleaning the house top to bottom on Hogmanay, so that it's all sorted for the new year, is something I always do, and so do most people I know.

In my family we eat 12 grapes at midnight, and then throw out a bucket of water over the front steps of the house to 'wash away' the year and start fresh! Don't know if this is a Hispanic thing, or a just my family thing but I do it every year!

Open the front and back doors to the house--to let the old year out and the new one in.

Well, my personal tradition is to watch the Twilight Zone marathon.  Love me some Rod Serling.   :)

My family's tradition going back generations is eating corned beef and cabbage on New Year's Day, since it's supposed to bring prosperity and good luck for the new year.

The first meal of the new year has to be saurkraut. Either with pork or hot dogs. Or you will have bad luck all year.

Eating black-eyed peas on New Year's Day is supposed to ward off evil spirits for the new year.  Don't know if this is African or Mexican--my friend who has both heritages told me about it.

Yeah, we always do this in Texas. I didn't do it last year, though, and I still had a great year!  :P Considering DH would rather eat dirt than black-eyed peas, I think we may have to skip it again this year!

We don't really have any traditions yet. Maybe we should make some! Usually everyone in the village goes out on New Years Day and gets completely hammered, but we have had my stepson for the last 2 years, so we stay in and watch movies and drink wine when the little guy goes to bed.  :)

My guess is African slaves brought the tradition to the south.

We eat black eyed peas and collard greens for prosperity in the new year- peas represent the coins and collards the bills (green.. like our money). I'm in GA and I suspect that's a southern thing...

DW is from NJ and last year made black eye peas for NY day dinner. Not sure if she is this time but it would use up some of the ham we have left.
