How long for a visa to emmigrate?
« on: December 28, 2009, 04:49:27 PM »
I'm lazy this morning so I'm not in the correct forum!!!

After reading a post I was wondering if anyone knows how long they should expect to wait for a visa to emigrate to the UK from the US?

How about the reverse. UK to US.

For the answer lets not get technical about different conditions or types.

Could a person move to another European community in less time. How about Poland, or other former block countries?

UK visas can be done in a week or so if you use an expediter.

US visas it depends on if you're filing in the US or through Direct Consular Filing at a US Embassy and for what type of a visa you're applying for.

As for other countries, it depends on where the applicant is from (EU or non EU) and which specific country. For a US Citizen going to Poland or other EU country (except UK) it would depend on if they qualified to go as the spouse/partner of an EEA person or if they would they would be going on their own and needing to apply for some other sort of visa.

Your question is too vague to give clear and accurate information or official internet page citations from government sources.

Jim, I will eat my hat the day your wife lets you move to the UK.

I was vague.

I was wondering if this poster had gone the normal route how long should she have to wait for a emigrant visa?

Lets see if I can make this clearer.

Your neighbor decides he wants to take his family to live in Florida and he applies for a visa, how long do you think it will take to get one?

My neighbor in the US wants to go and live in the UK, how long do you think it would take to get a visa.

These are straight visas, no student, marrying, special employment etc.

But Jim, surely you must know by now (if not, take a look at the visa threads) that you *can't* emigrate to the UK without marriage, being a student, or special employment.  It's even  more difficult to emigrate to the US from the UK.

Unless these neighbors are married to British citizens, they cannot just up and move to the UK. There are no 'straight visas' available.

So lets see if I have got this correct, a person can't move to the UK or the US if they want to.
I can't believe this is true ???

This is just hypothetical.

In my day Canada and Australia would pay your passage if you were from Britain  and wanted to go and live there. Things are a changing.
The quota in the US for the number of available visas for people from the UK was never filled so John F Kennedy changed that so other countries could use the quota.

A person who has no ties to the UK (like a spouse) or isn't going to be a student or sponsored worker cannot just up and move to the UK.

I know you can't get on the next plane over but are you saying you can't get a permanent resident visa unless you qualify for one of the above that you mentioned?

In the case of moving to the US I think there must be a waiting list and that is why the illegal issue is a hot button because if amnesty is given then you can jump the queue if you are here illegally?

Jim, I can't believe you've been on this forum for years and have participated in various discussions about this very same topic, and are still unclear about this!

This has not been true for decades. Like about 4 or 5.

Yeah, there is something called the 'Diversity Visa Lottery' for the US...but for the last couple of years the UK (Except those from Northern Ireland) hasn't been able to participate.
