What to do with all those pictures you get in Christmas cards
« on: December 30, 2009, 08:26:28 PM »
In addition to the photo cards we get for Christmas, people send us school pictures of their kids. Does anyone else get these? What do you do with them? In my old house I could put them on the fridge with magnets, but here that's not an option. They end up just laying around. Does anyone have any clever ideas?

I had a friend who attached those and family snaps she'd taken to a colorful ribbon with mini clothes pins. I think she had hers going across some windows, but you could do it on a wall, too.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I stick them on a bulletin board and then forget about them. I have a photo of my friend's child when she was anewborn and she just turned 4!

This is a good question because we just got a couple photos of kids we really don't even know - the parents are friends of DH from high school/college and although they're cute, I don't really plan on keeping their photos for eternity.  :-\\\\

Honestly?  Unless they're family, they get tossed/shredded/recycled.  I love my friends, and their kids are great, but I don't really need to keep pictures of them around.

The ribbon idea is kind of cute, though.

Yeah, that's kind of what I'm thinking.

I feel guilty throwng pictures away - almost like it's bad luck or something! So many of our friends are doing the email holiday greeting lately, that it's not really an issue for us right now, but if I had a bunch of non-family pictures, I'd probably hang them on the ribbon for a bit, then replace them with newer photos as they come along. Once I took them down, I'd either get brave (!) and throw them out, or chuck them in the big ol' box of pictures that one day I might get around to sorting!

Thrown in the bin! As mentioned on "Grumpy guide to Christmas", "we don't want to see photos of your kid, or dog, or find out you had a really great year whilst our's was crap, we don't care!"

Different of course of it's grandkids or nephews/nieces but random folk you've not seen for 5 years!

Glad to know I'm not the only one who chucks them straight in the bin!  :P

I'm sure there are many opposing viewpoints here, but I'd MUCH rather the sender save themselves the postage and printing fee, and send me a personalized email instead.

I've yet to get any of these but I was looking through some old albums at my parents house back at Thanksgiving. Mom has put all these school photos in the album and some she didn't remember! Some of them were like 20 years old. I don't understand why you'd keep them unless it was someone very close to you. But I also don't understand why you'd send them unless it was someone very close to you.

Ashley, I can't believe you have never gotten one of these photo cards! Amazing! One year, when I was single, I seriously considered taking a picture of my new roof as my 'see what's new with me this year' picture that everyone feels the need to send out!  :P

Anyways, I feel really guilty about throwing them away.  :-\\\\  Some are the Christmas card photos (which I feel less guilty about pitching), but I also get school photos of cousins kids and my nephews (which I would never throw away). I think the ribbon and little clothespin thing sounds like a good idea. I just discovered a place where I could hang that up.

Thanks!

Kim, let me know if you can't find mini clothes pins. I don't recall seeing them over there and my friend may have bought them on the Continent. If you can't I'll send you some!

I'm lucky, I don't get many!  Usually, just a family photo of my brother, wife and two daughters, and this year, a photo of my English niece and nephew (he's just under a year old).

Brother's family photo will end up getting tossed eventually.

The niece and nephew's photo?  I put it in the same frame as last year's photo of niece - the old photo moves to the back.  And I'll just keep adding photos to the front as time goes by.  I used to do this with one photo a year of each of my kids...eventually, the photo frame couldn't hold them all, but it's a good way of seeing how children you ARE close to change form year to year.
