Name Change
« on: August 04, 2004, 12:20:17 PM »
Hi, all. I would like to know your stories/sagas about getting your name changed after marrying your UK spouse. I would love to hear details about how you handled each of the following:

Social Security Number
US Passport
National Insurance Number
any other important document I may have left out!

Ta!

I changed my SSN and Passport here in the states but was done rather easily. Dunno if my story would be of any help to you though.

A mate of mine went through the embassy to do hers and only had to wait for her new SSN to come to her through the mail.

I changed my drivers license, SSN, passport, bank account and voters card all in less than a week.

I got my passport amended in person at the Embassy in London (now they use a courier service), same with my Social Security card.

I didn't get my National Insurance Number until after I'd gotten married and they issued it in my married name.

I changed one US credit card by post, sending them a scanned colour copy of my marriage certificate and my amended passport.  Changed my US checking account in person when I was there on a visit.

Changed my name on the voter's rolls in Florida when I applied by post for my absentee ballot (there's a space to do it on the form).

I think that's it.  I have one US credit card still in my maiden name only because I got distracted and haven't bothered to send them the information yet - I never use it, so I don't worry about it.  ;D

Thanks, I've booked the courier for Monday, 9th August. I can't seem to find the SS Number method online, though. Could you direct me to the proper website?

Here's the FAQ from the Social Security website.

Clicking around a bit led me to this address:

UNITED KINGDOM
Federal Benefits Unit
American Embassy
24/31 Grosvenor Square
W1A 2LQ London
England
Phone: 44-207-499-9000
Fax: 44-207-495-7200

Peedal did you have to go there in person or could you do this by mail? Sorry for so many questions.

I haven't changed my name yet on anything in the U.S. yet. The only thing, besides marriage license, that has my new name is my National Insurance number. So, in a way, I have my old last name for the states, and new one for here in the U.K. No reason, just plain old laziness.

On this subject... I'm getting married this coming Saturday, and after that my fiancee will send away for her FLR(M).  Does she apply for this under her married name, or her maiden name?  My fiancee thinks that her name isn't legally changed until she changes it on her social security, even though we're married.  I'm a bit confused about that.  Any thoughts?

It'll depend upon what's in her passport.  If she has her passport amended to reflect her married name prior to applying, then she should be ok to apply with her married name, otherwise she will need to apply with her maiden name.
